I can easily put myself in his shoes and imagine going into a new, strange forum full of optimism and good will, then getting blind-sided and shell-shocked by a barrage of personal attacks and criticism. It shouldn't take much imagination to picture that, even from us hardened, seasoned regulars. Likely, in my view, he felt obliged to try to defend himself, no matter how feebly. That high-tech mugging simply said to him "Get out and stay out"!! Not what he was expecting I would think. And even if he was trolling and succeeded in getting earnest, respectful replys from us . . . so what! How does that harm us if a mental midget gets his kicks from getting attention from strangers on the internet? Be the bigger man, the mature man and ignore the feeble-minded -- they got enough issues weighing them down already. Trollers are no big deal, they're a non-issue. |
I hate all new cyclists; what is they end up being faster than me? Best to discourage them early.

The kid asked for his bike to be judged. Ergo I judged it. I don't think anything i said was mean considering how uncomfortable that bike must be to ride.

There was a thread started here this morning by a new, young rider asking for comments on his bike. As usual several posters jumped at the apparently irresistible opportunity to blast the guy. Not surprising around here . . . inexcusable, yes, but sadly not surprising. Sure his bike had issues, but what do you expect from a new roadie? What really appalled me was the excuses -- somehow some guys felt justified in their insensitivities. Somehow some guys feel being mean to other people makes them a man, in their own feeble miscalculations. This too is typical . . . among the weak. They feel that insulting and injuring others makes them feel better about themselves and enhances their masculinity. You don't need to be a psychologist to decipher this . . . it's transparent, it's glaring, and it's pathetic. I have a suggestion -- if you find yourself so lacking in self-esteem in your life, do what a real man would do and work on your insecurities. Do some research -- the internet is conveniently at your disposal -- and spend more time working on correcting your shortcomings instead of lurking around internet forums pouncing on the defenseless. Internet muscles disappear when you're face-to-face. Disclaimer: I'm addressing just a handful of individuals, clearly not the majority. I'm adverse to internet conflict so I won't name names . . . they know who they are, they walk around with a perpetual chip on their shoulders. My apologies to the rest of the forum that these unpleasantries had to be addressed . . . and the Mods mercifully closed the thread before I could get this in. End of Rant. WOW!!....well said! |

Paul, I'm going to reply because you were perhaps the first in that post to reply with respect to the guy.

The kid will be back. And he'll drop each and everyone of you.

The more anonymous a message board or comment section is, the more likely people are to post things they would never consider saying face to face.
It's a fact of life, but there are solutions other than a warning message. The best thing I've seen done to help the problem without requiring real names is adding accountability to user names. For every post the user makes there is a "validate" button, users can either add or subtract validation points from each other but not for their own posts. So if you like what someone says, you click on the positive button and their number increases, if you don't like it you push the negative button and it decreases. The user that posted the message knows who liked and disliked their posts from the user cp panel, and is free to retaliate/reciprocate. Basically you get a contest for who can get the most validation points, so people have an incentive to say useful/funny/interesting things. |
I wish my first post got locked... Is it wrong that I'm envious of the kid?

If we're giving it marks for trolling then he lost the battle but but provoked a far better one, so I'd count it as a successful troll. His initial post was weak and was going to be shortlived if it's aim was to provoke an argument within the thread, but by turning it into an argument about the forum only using two posts was excellent (if possibly accidental) trolling.
As for people being ruder in an anonymous setting, you're hardly Sherlock Holmes if you've just noticed that. Of course some people are direct in real life and would call someone on being so ridiculous. If you're 19 years old you're an adult and should be expected to be capable of having seen bikes, doing some independent research and realise on your own that there is something not right with your bike. All that went on was a bit of pool cleaning in the shallow end of the gene pool. |

Being a "real man" is simple biology. It only takes testicles.

OP: "New here. Judge my bike pls! hey guys i'm new to cycling..19 years old. heres my bike..i was thinking of replacing the handlebars with bullhorns..what do you think of my bike and my idea?" reply: "Dude, You real need to fix your handle bar alignment. It hurts to look at." reply: "Good lord. Do you not notice slight discomfort while riding? Have you ever seen another bike before?" me: "since you asked, I think it's a stupid idea and the reason you probably wan to replace them is because, as others have pointed out, you current bar setup is fail. Did you adjust it to be like that, or did you buy the bike that way?" I don't think that was an unreasonable conversation... My question was serious, I was wondering if the bike came that way and he didn't know any better or if he adjusted it like that trying to "fix" something. |
I wonder how many internet comedians would be able to quit their day jobs...
Seriously...being a good comedian means more than just saying stuff that YOU think is funny. Other people have to think it's funny and let you know by responding accordingly. Troll or not - that was a new guy and some of that stuff wasn't funny by any standards. Don't quit day jobs folks. |

I read the original thread and didn't think anyone was really out of line. I must have read BF for months before I registered and started asking half-educated questions. But that was after I grew some thick skin and learned some of the personalities of the people that frequent this sub-forum and realized who to take seriously and who chimes in with witty but meaningless comments. That guy was trolling and he knew it. Joining a forum as active as this one is like moving to a new city and walking into a local dive bar alone. Long live 53/11 and RyanF. |
