Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hypothetical ultimatum

You come home one day and your current SO presents you with an absolute ultimatum: either give up riding or s/he is gone.

What's your pick? No whining about him/her "never doing that cause they care about my health", blah, blah, blah - just choose.

Is there a picture attached to this that I can't see that would allow it to make sense?

Assuming she's not the mother of my child(ren), it sounds like the SO has issues that will only get worse over time.

On the other hand, she probably hates your guts, is looking to get out of the relationship and knows this will be the death knell.

Cheers.

Seriously? What happened?

Do you have kids? I can see someone like pcad just going all day everyday and his wife could careless. In fact, the more the better. UMD is kinda young (I think) rides a ton and might not have kids yet. But when he does, they'll be hitched behind him. And I hope he slows down.

But really...wtf?

Maybe she wants to leave you because of your attitude problem, and not because of cycling?

Give up cycling but continue to shave your legs just to piss her off.

does your bike give you fulfillment? does your bike make you a better person?

can you snuggle with a bike on a cold night? can you even talk to your bike??

only you can answer these questions.

Bikes: Trek Émonda, 1961 Follis (French) road bike (I'm the original owner), a fixie, a mountain bike, etc.

Don't bother with a SO and this will never become a problem.

What I learned at work:

"Don't ask questions that you don't want to know the answers to."

About a SO -- if she doesn't like cycling at all, she's not a SO. The relationship wouldn't even get that far.

Bikes: Merlin Agilis, Trek 1500

I voted bye to the bikes.

Then again my wife's Trek is sitting in the middle of my family room and the Merlin she got me for my b'day is leaning against the wall, so I think I'm safe.

She would have to be a filthy-rich-goddess-that farts roses and craps chocolate to be able to overcome the obvious lack of common interest or concern for my mental health to say "sure I'll give up riding darling - you just ask".

- The answer is, of course, what kind of 'life-mate' would not allow you to pursue your will - unless of course it was robbing 7-11's, having relations with crack *****s, or some other such dubious activity. -

Now if faced with feeding the kids, curing that mystery rash and keeping that SO off the street corner - bikes would go I guess. But only after losing three autos, three kayaks, a couple of TV's, 2-3 computers, pay-TV, net access, stamp collection, and most every other luxury etc....

Hmm. If she's rich enough, she could support my fast car habit.

This issue comes up more with motorcycles than bicycles and I've seen many a man sell their mc's.

For what it is worth, I think the BIG difference is that bikes make you svelte and fit... and therefore sexier. And motorcycles make you fat, and reduce your IQ.

PS -- My wife supports my bike riding. She doesn't support my bike-related buying.

But I'm afraid I'd choose Miss Finland (my wife) over my bikes.
