Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just ordered a new/back-up set of Wellgo pedals. Oh... yeah I ordered a new/back-up chain as well.

I bought a new/back-up saddle a month or so ago when the brand/model I like was discontinued. I searched around and found a vendor that had some in stock and bought a spare. Then I got to thinking... I keep a stock of tubes. Now I had a saddle... I might as well keep spares of everything.

Speedplay pedals, switched over from older SPD style. Love the float but they are hard to clip into until they break in a little.

A lot of riding but doable if you go at least twice a week and put in some long rides every month. I was able to do 1400 in 11 months which is good for my first year or road cycling.

Which did you get? I have my float dialed down to almost nothing, and after a couple thousand miles they always get really floaty. I hate that feeling.

Look into Bont vaypor or Bont Vaypor +

Coming from 2 years of riding mainly S works and thinking they were the best shoe bar none for me, I stand corrected after riding both pair of my Bont vaypor +. They have narrow, standard and wide widths available, the entire sole (not just the insole) is moldable (infinite amount of times to get that perfect fit), but the best part of this shoe is the shape of the toe box.

Not saying I have it so you should also, just recommending yiu look into them considering you liked the sworks shoes as did i.

I found them to have a substantially better construction quality, made of higher grade materials and have an overall more high end feel, and they feel more solid on the foot as well. I find the closure system to feel more secure, and then the big kicker for me is the speedplay sole which Specialized does not offer at all.

I'll liken it to someone owning a Lexus for 5 years and thinking they had a great car (it is a really good car) and one day upgrading to a Rolls Royce. You could never go back to that (relative) POS Lexus again, right?

also, I usually think @bianchi10 has great taste, but really dude? Bont? those shoes are so hideous, they look like tri shoes from performance bike, even though I know they aren't.

Lol a lot of the Bont shoes are not my cup of tea, but I really like the vaypor and vaypor +. But I agree they may not appeal to everyone I guess. Personally I think the vaypor + is one of the sexiest shoes on the market, but that's just my opinion.

I think the low/long heel opening makes them look like a canoe.

It's cool. It's ok to disagree. I think it not only makes them look sleek, they are comfortable. I was just looking at the Rapha giro edition shoes and all I could see was how high the heel opening was. Seeing that I've owned and hated the Giro shoe, it doesn't interest me one bit, but based on looks alone I found them to be sinfully ugly.

I like the rapha shoe designs and colors, but I could never buy them because they are giro.

I actually don't like the design at all and the fact that they are giro makes it even worse. Being that Rapha is considered such a top shelf company, I'm surprised they didn't partner with a different brand. Not saying giro is garbage, but I definitely don't view them as the same tier as Rapha. I love the Rapha that I have but much like Bont, there are only certain lines from Rapha that I like. If it wasn't for their pro team line, I'm not sure I would have ever tried it.

Last winter I purchased a set of Zipp 30 clinchers for my road bike and the OEM Axis 3.0 wheelset was "handed down" to the hybrid. The Shimano RS81 C35's weigh the same as the Zipp 30's and are supposed to be very robust and comfortable. I'm going to put a set of Continental GP4000s2's, in the new 28 mm size, on them and hopefully experience the same improvement in acceleration/climbing that I did on my road bike.
The other nice thing about the RS81 C35 wheelset is that they will accommodate everything from an 8 to 11 speed cassette which makes them very "swappable", between my bikes, if the need arises. It took this past season to realize how mediocre the stock Axis 3.0 wheels are. I only wish that the graphics of the RS81 C35's weren't under a layer of clear coat, and can't be removed, as I would like to have them a little more stealthy in appearance. My hybrid is a sleeper lol! (I did mention that it is winter, didn't I?)

^ no problem with you listing a 'hybrid' purchase of RS 81's here...I'm just suprised at the purchase itself. RS21's or so would have made more sense (IMO). But it sounds like you ride that bike with a pretty serious intent - rather than more of an 'around town' ride like some of us use a hardtail MTB, hybrid, or older roadie. They should liven up your ride for sure. Enjoy 'em!

Interesting. I was thinking of some white shoes (I won't get rid of the S-works just yet), and I can get the Bont Vaypor + for about $250 +/- I've heard from some about the comfort, I'm incredibly flatfooted (practically convex), so can't handle much of an arch in any footbed. The thing that always put me off was the appearance of a really fat toebox. Do they look pretty bulbous? I have average width feet.

Makes sense, I do have to admit to really liking the looks of the Sidi's, plus when I was a teenager in the early-mid 80's they were essentially made of un-obtaineum. I've also heard that fit can be hit or miss based on the individual's foot (which I understand is the same for all shoes but seem to be a more pronounced criticism of Sidi's). That's why I was wanting to get impressions from those who liked the fit overall of the S-Works. I was toying with the idea of changing to Speedplay but frankly there seems to be no point, my Dura Ace pedals have been flawless for a decade and now that they are wearing down I expect to replace them with the same. Those Wire Vent's sure are sweet looking.

Regardless of Bont or Sidi, my challenge will be ordering and hoping they fit since there is no place within a 2 hour drive for me to demo. Were the sizes for you two the same as your S-Works? 42.5 fits me perfectly in those.

@robbyville-i don't think so. They do a wider toe box than sworks. If you have a smaller (40 or smaller) and wide foot I can see how they would look that was, but standard width and "normal sizes" don't look that way to me.

As for flat feet, I find that the Bont shoe has less arch than the sworks, plus the entire footed can be molded infinitely.

Thanks! I do like that yellow. Plus with the new Harley hobby, paying retail for the Sidi's may be a little out there for me
