the lack of overlap with a 53/34 will make plenty of cross chaining possibilities and wishing you had shifters that can dump through the cassette.
if you really want that super tall gear, pick up a DA 56T outer, 42T middle and 32T inner.

You can get a 110 bcd compact crank which will allow you to use a 34 and although uncommon you can get a 53 for it as well. But I doubt the derailer would be able to shift it...

Have a 50/34 & 11/25 on my new Felt F75. I'm fairly new to road biking, but no stranger to climbing on a mountain bike. However, the area where I live is somewhat of a conundrum for me. There are many miles of flat bike trails where I wish I had a standard instead of the compact. But I get off those trails, and there are plenty of hills, some of them steep enough that I find myself needing to stand up and mash to the top.
I sometimes wonder if switching out with a cassette that has a 27 would be just about perfect for my situation.

My commuter road bike is a triple with 53/42/30. I spend 40%of my time in the 42 ring, 35% in the 53, and only 20% in the 30, but that 20% of the time I am there, I need it with the hills on my commute.

I ride 53/39 which is fine for the D.C. area but I got killed on the hills in Strawberry Fields Forever this year (great ride BTW). Just not used to the much longer hills. I knew I was in trouble when most of the other riders were showing up with triples and compacts!
