Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

PTs are being sold by Performance now. (It seems that if you ever bought anything from them, you receive their catalogues for life).
BTW, in the same catalogue, they have Garmins (705) and shimano DA Di2; they used to have mostly cheap stuff before.

Ok, there's the single wheel issue. But I think either way you're wrong. Training with power is not a training fad.

i don't think there is a 1.0 correlation between owning a power meter, and training with power.

In fact PTs are so common I've even seen one on a Pacer, with Honjos:

(I normally use it on the Ciocc but use it on the Pacer sometimes too)

So BD, what do you think the abundance of PTs points to? That more people are actually doing (structured) training, or just spending dough wastefully?

Seems like if people want to waste money, it should be with lighter parts, not a heavier hub.

I prefer the "single wheel issue" due to the fact it is much easier to move the PT from my road to my TT bike and throw a disc cover on than switch out an SRM or Cinqo bike to bike. If I could afford it, I would be running an SRM on both, but that just isn't happening.

I am with you. Training with power is not a fad. PTs can be had for less than a 1000 bux now and do everything and more than 90% of the public will ever need. Of course you will start seeing them on people's bikes that have no clue what they are for but will run them because they saw Joe Pro with one.

I used to switch my SRM between my CAAD9 and my Crosscheck, since I would race/train on one and commute (long distances) on the other. The switching was fast and easy - but I soon found I was way over-geared when running the 53/39 on the Surly. Swapping chainrings is a much bigger PITA than unbolting a crank and plugging it into a new BB.

SRM vs Powertap cost? (Crank, training wheels, race wheels, disc wheel)

SRM
-----
SRM Crank: $3200
Mavic Open Pros: $300
Zipp 404's: $2200
Zipp Sub-9: $1800

TOTAL: $7500

Powertap
---------
Sram Rival Crank: $125
Mavic Open Pros w/ PT hub: $850
Zipp 404's w/ PT hub: $2750
Zipp Sub-9 w/ PT hub: $2900

TOTAL: $6625

The PT also requires a little less maintenance and is easier to keep calibrated.

You can't calibrate a powertap. Gotta send it back to Saris.

The SRM Gossamer is $2,800.

Where are you getting your prices (links)?

if we went with all prices from the same company (Competitive Cyclist), then it breaks down like this (I tried to get everything ANT+ compatible to level the playing field):

SRM:
SRM Gossamer - $2,895.00
Mavic Aksium - $249.99 (CC doesn't have the open pros)
Zipp 404s - $2,285.00
Zipp Sub9 - $2,075.00
Total - $7504.99

PowerTap:
SRAM Rival cranks - $190.00
PowerTap w/DT RR1.1 - $2,200 for rear wheel, $100 for front wheel (i'll be generous, it isn't on the site)
Zipp 404PT - $2,900 for the rear wheel, $500 for the front (i'll be generous, it isn't on the site)
Zipp Sub9PT - $3,675
Total - $9,565

Thanks for the expert opinion. Case closed.

BTW, I think this is a thread about Powertaps, but I could be wrong.

From what I see, I don't think there is a 1.0 correlation between owning a power meter and "training," period.

that's not the point. the point is that it's no big thing to spot a PT, or Zipps, or whatever the latest and greatest is on your average fat ass cat 5 in the US.

in europe - specifically in the netherlands - you never see that 'buy your way to the top' mentality. most of my friends are perfectly happy with their gear.

even if they covet fancy schwag, they tend to spend their money on more worthy things, like trips to italy/france/spain to ride their bikes.

if PTs weren't so maintenance heavy, i would have picked one up ages ago.

every other week someone in the 33 is having issues with their PTs.

granted, they always praise saris for it's customer service, but i have my doubts that it's as sterling in europe as it is in NL.

However, those in Europe also get more services than we do in the US.

I use my powertap wheel on 3 bikes.

Road Race bike
Long distance/wet weather bike
(soon to be) cross bike.

That wouldn't work out so good with a crank PM.
