From this past weekend's MTB ride; somewhere between my place and where I pick up the Pacific Crest Trail.

I rode 104 miles on Saturday, and this was one of the few segments that did not have a tree canopy. I love canopies, but this expansive vista of the mountains and low clouds was inspiring.

From today's ride. I hadn't been up to the Monitor Pass in a while and I wanted to see if the aspen trees were in their fall color yet. They're not quite; but they'll be there soon since the temperature has been dropping of late. Always an awesome ride anyway.

Welcome to California's Great Central Valley. Not so great for cycling, but it's where a lot of your food is grown.

Indeed! The Central Valley of California doesn't get the respect it deserves.

That looks like it's down Bakersfield way?

Colnago Mixte 09-25-17 07:15 AM

Yeah, it's in the dead zone on the west side of the valley west of Bakersfield in the old Tulare Lake bed. Looks like they have a big project trying to reclaim farmland from salt and alkali by flooding it and diverting the water into brackish canals.

It's as desolate an area I have seen, and would be a great place to film the next Mad Max movie. :)

And speaking of movies, the famous scene from Hitchcock's North by Northwest where Cary Grant is being chased by a crop duster was filmed only a few miles away from this spot. This area defines the word "desolation".

Although I live pretty close to Lake Tahoe, I avoid the place like the plague during the summer. But, this time of year, when most of the tourists have gone, the place is nearly tolerable. Of course, how can you not love it; it is sublime. I've been doing some MTB-ing and hiking, along with some backpacking, this year, in the Desolation Wilderness. The latter two pics were taken from the top of Mt. Tallac, overlooking Cascade Lake, Emerald Bay, and Lake Tahoe; the second looks out over the Desolation Wilderness, on the western side of the peak.

Wow! This flat lander is very envious. 😢

About six or seven miles from where most of these pictures were taken, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in January, 1848. I love riding through what is known as California's Gold Country, which is situated west of where I live, just over the "hill". The place is steeped in so much history; and it is easy to imagine, as you ride along, all of the feverish activity that must have taken place in those days, long ago. Gold is still very much sought after here. In fact, I ran into an older gentleman from the area, not that long ago, who said that he was able to pay for his property taxes from assiduously mining for gold, throughout the year, in a small stream that ran through his property. There are lots of gravel roads in this area, as well as many old, halfway abandoned asphalt roads in various states of condition.

Tip: for an interesting history of the area refer to the published memoirs of General William Tecumseh Sherman, who spent most of the years, 1846-1850, in northern California (he even owned part interest in a small general store in Coloma, where Sutter's Mill is situated).

A mix of bikes, here . . .

But it's supposed to be (look like) northern Indiana. I'm from northern Indiana and I don't think it's a good likeness. What is it with movie makers not wanting to film movies about Indiana IN Indiana? The TV series BREAKING AWAY was apparently filmed in Georgia because IT looked more like southern Indiana than southern Indiana does.
