This was a photo I took early one morning on RAGBRAI in 2015. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...92a2ce2d1b.jpg Ragbrai 2015, getting an early start has it’s perks. |

North side Refugio (a dirt road) is in great shape right now. I just rode down and back up yesterday on my gravel bike and it's certainly passable on a road bike or in a normal passenger car. It's a pretty good climb that gains 1500 feet in 3.3 miles. I tried to post photos but it now says I need at least 10 posts so something has changed on this site since my previous post. Here are url's to my Strava activities that have some photos of that road:
strava.com/activities/1437000974 strava.com/activities/1493346526 strava.com/activities/1546293325 will look to tackle both sides of refugio and amble over to el camino cielo and catch some of the race near the top of gibraltar. |
Some great pictures here, hope I will be able to post some from my Japan trip coming up :)!

I gotta ask, did anyone turn left and go to La Grange?
Somewhere I heard some guy with a big beard say "They got a lotta nice girls there. Just let me know . . . if you wanna go . . ." https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/976/27...3e794a_b_d.jpg |
Some of these roads ahead are not very empty....

Great call! I'm not sure that the guy in the photo could have even made that call.
melty lately during semi-reasonable hours and i'm not the earliest riser. not my fave climb but still epic and worthy. esp when there's a klondike bar at the mt. laguna store. great pic. the detail of the road surface, the width of the road, the lack of traffic, surrounding vista, shrubbery and familiarity all conspired to id it as kitchen creek. |

This was before the heatwave, so not too bad. And substitute beer for klondike bar, and I agree with you. Although keep in mind that my ride essentially ends at the market, as it's almost all down hill from there back to the car parked in Pine Valley.
