been meaning to do that. hopefully this year. would like to discern if the north side of refugio dropping down is actually navigable by mortal road bikes
or some walking/much walking involved down to the santa ynez valley. helluva climb supposedly. my knees ache just thinking about it.

North side Refugio (a dirt road) is in great shape right now. I just rode down and back up yesterday on my gravel bike and it's certainly passable on a road bike or in a normal passenger car. It's a pretty good climb that gains 1500 feet in 3.3 miles. I tried to post photos but it now says I need at least 10 posts so something has changed on this site since my previous post. Here are url's to my Strava activities that have some photos of that road:

This was a photo I took early one morning on RAGBRAI in 2015.

Ragbrai 2015, getting an early start has it’s perks.

gibraltar.

thanks again. rode from the coast up refugio and over into the town of santa ynez then over san marcos pass back to goleta. blew off the atoc. lots of cyclists out
except in the refugio area. epic and worthy on both sides. descending north side not too bad. had 23's on my road bike but most would be happier with 25's or 28's.
i'd be reluctant to decend the west/ocean side on any size tire tho. pavement pretty beat up. even more so than the east/dirt side.

Great call! I'm not sure that the guy in the photo could have even made that call.

I gotta ask, did anyone turn left and go to La Grange?

Somewhere I heard some guy with a big beard say "They got a lotta nice girls there. Just let me know . . . if you wanna go . . ."

Yeah my last post was an empty road, in front of the guy, in front of me.

Maybe make an eye appointment. You can clearly see riders in the distance who have turned left. Or at least I can. And notice the blue sign on the right.

looks like maybe noon-1:15pm climbing that stretch? how hot was it? humidity? been wanting to get back out there but it's been ridiculously
melty lately during semi-reasonable hours and i'm not the earliest riser. not my fave climb but still epic and worthy. esp when there's a klondike bar
at the mt. laguna store. great pic. the detail of the road surface, the width of the road, the lack of traffic, surrounding vista, shrubbery and familiarity all
conspired to id it as kitchen creek.

This was before the heatwave, so not too bad. And substitute beer for klondike bar, and I agree with you. Although keep in mind that my ride essentially ends at the market, as it's almost all down hill from there back to the car parked in Pine Valley.
