Yeah, I guess if a road doesn't go anywhere, it can be fairly deserted even in an urban area, you mainly just have to avoid roads that people commute to work on. When I lived in the Bay Area, I used to love going up to Mt. Diablo in the afternoons, and once you gain some altitude, be able to look down on hundreds of thousands of people trapped in traffic below, but only have to deal with a few cars yourself, because the road only went to the top of the mountain and then back down, so no commuter traffic. That was pretty awesome.

Awesome!
It's hard to judge distances across such a vast openness. How far would you say it is to the far side? |
Looks like a location from the film Vanishing Point.

It’s not that far to ride out of the photo to the left. It’s probably 10+ miles from where i was standing, going further north to Hwy 190 and Death Valley as you then go through into the other side of the paramint mountains.

Boring hills west of the central valley.https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...f0021714f3.jpg .at least there are never any cars.

I drove through Hwy 198 recently, between Coalinga and King City. I believe it crosses over the San Andreas Fault at some point, very twisty road. Not much of a shoulder to speak of though, sadly. Tops out around 2500 feet, IIRC. Scenic road, but I would not want to drive it at night.
