Thanks. My team of domestiques laid across the road, creating a human barrier to allow me to take the shot. Seriously, there are times when traffic when, for whatever reason, in both directions stops. Wow, I would have never guessed there were roads that deserted in the LA area. I hope you enjoy your two weeks of spring, that green grass will probably be brown by the end of March. I bet those 3 cars you saw probably all passed you at or near the same time. Murphy's Law.
Is that fire damage on those hillsides? Hopefully some wildflowers will appear at some point, |

Mullholland hwy in the Santa Monica mountians is ridable again. The road is down to 1 lane in a few short places but most of the construction/repairs are done. There was still a local traffic only sign on the PCH end but no State Patrol at that junction now. I had just two cars and a truck on the climb which was nice. The fire took more trees and houses than on Decker rd.

That climb looks wicked. Photo really captures the apparent steepness, which is difficult takes some skill to do. Any idea of the gradient?
I've discovered that the toughest climbs in California, are commonly at the lower elevations that never (or rarely) get any snow. Road builders take advantage of that fact to include some really punishing 15-20% grades on hills, often foregoing switchbacks and going straight up steep hillsides. It's the reason why the Eroica rides have such steep climbs, as the Central Coast has an unbelievably mild climate and gets a tiny trace of snow maybe once every 50 years. |
this little 50 yard (or so) stretch felt like 16% or so. there were some other ramps later on the climb but i remember this one as being the hardest. heading farther uphill, it vacillates between 6-11% for another 3 miles or so.
horrible pavement but it's not an issue until you descend it. the western (dirt) side doesn't have anything this steep. |

Most of my rides take me through my beloved Ventura County. I love riding here. Over the past 30 years I have been up and down these roads; I know every rise and every drop, I know every hill and every descent, I know where and when the prevailing winds will pick up and I can plan accordingly. When diabetes finally robs me of my eyesight and renders me blind, I will still be able to mount my trusted Bottecchia and tell her, “come on my dearest bici, take me for a ride.” The Bottecchia and I have traversed these roads often enough that she will know exactly where to take me. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...5e8998510.jpeg |

Seeing some of these open road photos makes me long for living in a much less populous place. I envy some of you folks and your routes.

So unless you are retired, independently wealthy, or have succeeded in gaming the whole "working for a living" system, it's tough to keep a roof over your head and food on the table.
