Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My ride today will be approx 60 miles. One clif, bring 2 hammer gels and water. Plenty for that length of ride. Most times one gel will come home with me.

Gatorade.................. not so good.

Imagine how much better you would ride not to mention fewer nature breaks if you used a REAL energy/sports drink.

For you, yes ... because you've ridden a few 100K rides. But remember that the OP's longest ride is 50 km. Better to advise him to eat more rather than less ..... or we'll end up with the "Why Did I Bonk?" thread on Monday.

If we burn 500 calories per hour on a bicycle (for example, and keeping in mind that the OP will not likely be riding at race pace), consuming 250 calories per hour is not a bad goal to aim for. Also, those 250 calories per hour can come from both solid food and liquid nutrition. So, the sports drink of choice can be included in that total.

As long as you know that you are in the minority. By the way, what are you doing with all these miles?

It's a great place to ride Vireo. I think we have about 4 miles of flat riding on the entire island. You would know this Did you ever pound up Mount Erie on Fidalgo? Now that's a ******* of a hill. It's 10 miles from me and on suffer days it's my place to play.

The winters are kinda touch and go though.

My group has been out every saturday since January. Damn cold and wet a few of those days. I know... HTFU.

Definitely not true. Gatorade is wayyyyy too sugary for me on a hot day. Instant rolling stomach.

This is true, I noticed I eat much less on longer rides than I used to, especially if they're slower paced rides.

My last 100 mile day, I did 30 miles in the morning with my team, had some endurolytes and drank a bottle of heed.
Ate two protein bars on a break then didn't eat anything for the last 70.

I don't think you are qualified to say what it does or does not do for anyone else.

He may not ride long distances mindlessly every day but some of his ride report threads would beg to differ.

You better hurry up, you are 850 miles off-pace for your 20,000 mile goal this year.

Simple: learn to ride with no hands. Or is someone going to say that looks "d0uchy" too?
