Actually that's my biggest problem with lazy right there. We're all a-holes if we call someone a fred or don't wave, but if some out of shape guy wants to buy an expensive bike then he is a "big tittied poser"

Raising the Abyss
I know, I hear ya --- but I think at this point, (hopefully) Lazy is just like this on the interwebs. Not worth it to take too seriously, IMO.

I'm content with the bike Pantani rode around 2000-2001. May have been expensive at some point....
As far as investments go, there are a lot worse ones than bikes. If you buy a brand new bike and use it very lightly you can generally recoup a lot more of the cost than if you did the same with a car.
Ultimately, the biggest fat Fred on the most expensive bike is better than some ******* in a pickup truck who hates cyclists. The more cycling voters the better, right?

What do my titties have to do with it? What does anything have to do with it? It doesn't matter what bike you have or how fast you are. A dick is still a dick, no matter what he buys or looks like. A nice person is nice no matter what....

I care that other riders pay too much and are willing to. This drives prices up for us all. It allows 'brands' to achieve premiums on what are otherwise Chinese production line objects.
I also believe that Lazy has had the right perspective - even if expressed in a volume of passion. Never give up the fight Lazy.
I think all Cervelo riders are lemmings and have purchased their model because they wanted 'the' brand to pose with. Posers. Every-time has that brand.

I have witnessed the guy at the counter asking for the "most expensive" numerous times and it makes me laugh. Add that to the fact that I couldn't differentiate where his man boobs began and his belly ended, and I had a real hoot. Yeah yeah yeah, he can spend whatever he wants on whatever and can buy and sell me 1000 times over, but at the end of the day he is a big tittied poser.
I don't disagree with your sensible attitude to using money prudently, but you are so drunk on your own righteousness that any amount of vitriol and venom is justified in the name of a good cause, i.e. to teach those silly people how to live up to your high standards.
And then to chastise us for not waving and crowing about how nice you are to all cyclists. Priceless.

Raising the Abyss
Well, he doesn’t object to being called one…
I haven’t been here in a while (some of you guys should try it --- it ain’t so bad!), so my gut feeling is that ole Lazy could have been up to his usual dickery.
But (and I’m not trying to encourage the salty, old curmudgeon)… if you take out some of the trolling and rude(?)/self righteous comments, there’s a point – or at least IMO there is, afterall I’m a slight curmudgeony pinko myself.:
…rich people still "value" money and don't always buy everything that is the "most expensive" just because they can.…
The whole "because I can" theory is so overblown on this forum that many of you really don't know how the super wealthy think. They may drop big money on watches and jewelry, real estate and cars but not on every activity they engage in. And when they do, they are often self conscious that they are "overdoing" it because they don't want to look like idiots. Buying quality and overindulging are totally different things…
BTW, this is more a debate about the overindulgence of American Consumerism than it is about the bike.
…over-exuberance leads to waste in many cases. This is common sense and many of you arguing against this by saying "it is not your money" are just missing the greater point.
Yes, I can do whatever I want with my money. How about I go to the safe deposit box and take out $15k and flush it down the toilet? Please advise me on this because you guys are swaying me.

…I am not a Socialist or Communist but I don't agree with American overconsumption either. The whole redneck ideal of "I am an American and if I want to drive my 12 cylinder gas guzzler, I can because Damn it, I am an American and that is my right".
Capitalism is a good thing, waste is not. You'll see, you'll all see and are witnessing where that is getting us. Look how obese we are, our kids are lazy and stupid compared to European countries, our health care system is ranked behind many other countries that would surprise you. The "Myth" of how great we are in the USA is being exposed.
Watching the Tour De France ride through Switzerland on sunday actually raised this topic in my house. My buddy is in Switzerland as we speak for a conference and emailed me about this same topic as well. They have a higher life expectancy, more money and universal health care. So please stop with the whole USA capitalist ideal.

What a dirtbag. No one mentioned fatties. You associate unworthy, wreckless spending by rich people with fatties.
I don't disagree with your sensible attitude to using money prudently, but you are so drunk on your own righteousness that any amount of vitriol and venom is justified in the name of a good cause, i.e. to teach those silly people how to live up to your high standards.

However, I have been to a bike shop where a guy came in, talked to the first salesman he saw and said "i want the best bike you have, i dont care how much it costs." to me that is gluttunous behavior and it actually did bother me. I dont care if you saved all summer for a new bike or if your a millionaire; lack of research and attention to detail when buying an expensive bike and having the attitude that "the most expensive bike is obviously the best" is disrespectful to cyclists everywhere and it cheapens what we all work so hard to achieve. If you cant respect the machine, you shouldnt be riding it.

this thrad is still going.
When I go to races, all levels of races. Across all the grades are folks riding all types of bikes.
There is the slightly overweight guy with a mega buck machine, thing is he may have been a ex world champ and took up drinking booze and food for 4 years (true story).
there is always a new guy with a mega machine too, racing in a lower grade, no problems there, they might have been into other forms of cycling for years and are testing out another type of racing.
there is also the super fast folks on budget bikes, box section wheels etc, probably never ride and expensive bike or will once they are given them for free by way of sponsorship.
don't worry, it's a healthy thing to do. Cycling, training and racing, even just riding, getting out and about in some fresh air, maybe the ride is what it's all about, maybe friends, maybe the machines themselves appeal to you and you like the look and feel of what you consider good bits of bike.
For every $10k + bike that sits in the garage and gets riden a few times, there has to be a lot of folks, usually older and unfit that take up the sport and improve their fitness and perhaps their lives and well being. So what does the cost matter.
be happy that the folks are keeping your local shops open by cluelessly buying expensive kit from them. Be happy that these folks bring money into the sport, hey maybe they are old, fat and worked all their lives, took up cycling starting with a de rosa, super record with boras, rode for 6 months and start pumping money into the local cycling scene, promoting their business and sponsoring racing and or junior development.
Encourage them to spend, don't hassle them.

I've been involved with a lot of various sports over the years but have never experienced jealousy surrounding equipment like this before. I own a sub 2k bike, but couldn't care less if someone who had never ridden before showed up to a ride with a 10k machine. I just don't get where the hate comes from. If someone wants to spend the money, more power to them IMO. Some spend lots on cars, boats, and other toys, but those don't invoke the jealousy I see here on the forums surrounding bikes.
Honest question: why?

Oh, and piss on what the bike costs... I've spent more on accessories per year than on the original cost of the bike by far. Clothing for year-round riding, bike consumables, tools, parts, spares, nutrition, organized ride fees, etc., etc., and so forth.
And what's your time worth? Anyone ever figure how much that costs?

No irony, I wasn't plunking down $10k for a bike when I was that fat. In fact, I bought a $400 flat bar road bike to jump start my getting back into shape. I went from 260 to 180 in 5 months because I actually rode my bike.

Wow, lots of extreme opinions on here. I dont really care how people spend their money. I get envious when i see someone fly by me on the road, whether their riding a $500 bike or a $5000 bike. doesnt really matter. the fact is, that guy is going really fast and handling turns like a beast and thats what i love. speed and tight turns that you arent always so sure your going to make it through. thats why i ride my bike. If you do that on a cheapo then thats awesome. if you do it on a cervelo with zipps then thats awesome too. Im envious of cyclists, not bicycles.
