When I went to the States a few years ago, for some reason I couldn't help exaggerating my accent. It was like deer trapped in the headlights. I'd say something and they'd just stare. It was mesmerising for both parties.
We're also over polite, too. If you want something, saying "Umm.....not sure......maybe I'll have one of those..and maybe that one too, please, if that's okay" is a big mistake. The only way to get service in the US is to push in and yell "I'LL HAVE ONE OF THOSE RIGHT HERE! W00T!!!!!".

very true Thylo. As I found in NJ/NY over the years, it helps to be tall and loud. You can order by standing 3 people back from the counter and yelling it out to them over the top of everyone else. :)

Maurice is a crazy frenchman who called newcastle home over 30 years ago. His favourite hobbies are bikes and creating giant clouds of spittle when he talks (as in don't stand to close when in conversation). It's amazing how many words he knows that contain the letter p!

Anyway, there's a bike shop in Park Avenue near the gates at Adamstown. That's where Expat was going to meet us for the Anzac Day Ride. Seeing as I'm no longer navigating I thought I'd better give you a map (unfortunately its split into two).

You forgot to mention that he is completely incomprehensible to Americans, and is more of a collector than anything else. His shop is packed full of crap. I went in for a shim, and he told me to use roof flashing. I asked how big a bike was (was thinking it would be nice for the missus) and was told "That wonts fits you". Couldn't spend money there if I tried. But since you guys all cancelled, it doesn't matter where his shop is now, does it?

Been riding/racing?

yeah keeping busy...'road' season starts next weekend, so trying to get a few miles into the legs, now that I've recovered from my 'niggling' injuries. Did the 'hell ride' this morning, was NOT happy to see Dave Macca roll up & announce, "boys, I'm in need of a serious workout!"....anyway, 60km & 45kph ave later, I'm totally trashed!...Anyway, the good news is that I should have a 'spankin' new 486 parked in my study by the middle of next week. TFM confirmed everythings a goer, so here's hoping!....geez I've had some drama's with this warranty!

OK, a bike related question.

I need to find a shim for a front derailleur. I have a 1 1/8 diameter seat tube but a 1 1/4 clamp. Are these things made or do you have to fudge them up somehow? If I can't I gues I'll be looking on e-bay for a new derailleur.

And also, what's the best way to install a headset at home without tons of tools needed? Has anyone used the carriage bolt with washers and nuts on the ends technique? For an older frame I figure this might work out OK.

Is this for a mountain bike? 8 or 9 speed? Top or bottom pull? I may have one derailleur left. And did you want to borrow my headset press?
