Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Seat bag screwed up my bibs

I had taken my seat bag off to try to find the source of a noise. I put it back on today before my ride today. Then about 15 minutes into my ride I realized that the velcro around the seatpost had been rubbing on the inner right thigh of my bibs. It really roughed up the material on my nicest pair of bibs. Needless to say, I'm irritated with myself for not checking the setup better before riding. What do other people do to get around this issue? Is it just attention to setup? Or, is there some trick I haven't figured out yet?

Most of us only let this happen once

I use a little electrical tape to make sure it doesn't go anywhere.

Trim the velcro. That seatpost strap seems to always be huge. Same thing happened to me.

I dont understand how everything can't be fit in the jersey pockets; spare tub/multitool/300g carbs/phone/ credit card/ cash/ bunch of other random things....easily fit. I've rode many centuries and have never ran out of room in my 3 jersey pockets.

What about those who use small sized jersey or carry tubulars?

Get a decent saddle bag and be done with it. And always make sure the hook portion of the hook-and-loop is covered.

And regarding what items go where, there's a simple rule I follow: stuff I may need goes in my pockets, stuff the bike may need goes in the saddle bag.

Edit: a good seamstress who knows how to work with lycra can fix a hole or tear in shorts. If she (almost always a she) is really good, you'll never know you had a hole.

+1... after trimming it, use a lighter and seal up the end.

Bag with no seat post strap like a scicon elan or keep your stuff in your pockets.

I had the exact same problem. The electrical tape is a great solution. My problem came about when I got my new bike and the aero seatpost (Cervelo S1) left a lot more of the hook part of the attachment exposed. I also have a nice little fuzzy spot on the one leg of my one pair of bibs. I solved it with a Fizik saddle bag that clips into my Arione saddle, no straps, works for me.

Two tubes, tire levers, patch kit, pump, at least three bars, multi-tool, phone, cc/cash, arm warmers, leg warmers, gilet, hat, cleat covers, god forbid you need three bottles of liquid... all in your pockets? Please take a photo of your jersey with this stuff in it (minus warmers and extra bottle - that is asking a bit much). It can probably be done with a decent amount of jerseys, but why bother?

I like having my mechanical emergency stuff not taking up valuable food/phone/'clothing I can put on while riding' space.

I hate the feeling of tons of stuff in my jersey pockets. I'd rather ride with a *gasp* handlebar bag than have all that crap tugging at my jersey.

Some years ago, I noticed that the inner part of my left leg always had some abrasion on each pair of shorts. It always seemed sort of strange, but whatever... Then one day while riding, it hit me like bird poop on the windshield, "the velcro on that Blackburn bag!"

Not sure I'd make the jump to the handlebar bag unless I had a crapton of stuff to carry, but I don't get the saddle bag hate. I keep the stuff I need to fix a flat in my saddle bag and leave it there until it is needed.

It would suck to have to load and unload this stuff into my jersey every ride, not to mention I hate having all that junk in my jersey.

And yeah, I understand making this post to tell the story, but not being able to figure out what to do with the velcro?

This exact thing happened to me recently. I was using an older Pedros mountain bike bag. Before I realized it both my Assos and my PSU kit was roughed up a bit. At first I thought it was the zipper on the bag but now I've concluded that it was the velcro around the seatpost. I probably could've trimmed it off and kept using it but I had already gotten a Specialized mini wedge by the time I figured it out. The Pedros will stay on the mountain bike from now on.

I shifted my very small (less than 2 inches wide) bag reward on the saddle about an inch, and no longer wrap the velcro around the seatpost. I added cut 2 tiny holes in the top of the back, and ran a cable tie through the holes and over the seat rails. Ten minute fix (7 minutes to get and drink one beer, 3 minutes to install). Bag is no longer removal, and the velcro doesn't scuff the seatpost and my bib shorts.

Been there, done that with a decent pair of shorts... Now I carry stuff in my jersey pockets, which I don't mind at all.
