I was riding my Tarmac today and minding my own business. Suddenly I hear "Jersey under your bibs" in rather command tone. So I look around and see that fella with shaved legs, in skinsuit and on a nice Time bike. So I ask him why? He says it "practice". Well if it is custom or some UCI rule then I do not really give a flying ... about it. If it has some REAL reason then I'd like to know about it.
When I first got bibs I was actually wearing jersey on top of those but pretty soon discovered what happens when the nature calls on a long ride and you urgently have to remove that jersey and it clings to a sweaty skin like crazy.. So those are my "practical reasons" for wearing it this way. As for reaching into back pockets ... Well, my keys, wallet and phone are in a tiny fanny pack so I do not really need those pockets. Almost forgot, I do not shave my legs either. Yeah, yeah, none of that guy's business, but he has a point. |
Three reasons:
- Access to the pockets in the jersey so you can reach stuff will on the bike - The bib straps cover your nipples, thus avoiding the bad chafing they might get against some jerseys - Tradition |
Sometimes it lasts all day. I eat before the ride so few hrs later nature make it's call |
Whew...just too easy and no challenge.

I suggest one of these over your bibs:

Never had that problem. 3 - I mostly ride alone so I'm not much in that "tradition" stuff. I do have couple of "real roadie" friends and ride with them occasionally but they've never mentioned my outfit |

I'm pretty new to cycling, since you obviously don't mind embarrassment, could you write a "Things not to eat before a ride" thread. Thanks.

Well, wearing your bib shorts on top of your jersey is the least of your concerns, apparently. Under these circumstances, I can't imagine that we'd be able to change your mind. You just posted this to be contrarian, didn't you?
Yeah, yeah, none of that guy's business, but he has a point. |
We've mentioned plenty of reasons, but you just dismissed all of them, because you want to be different. Whatever.
If you lose things out of rear pockets, you're doing it wrong. |

No because I have my own PRACTICAL reasons. I posted it only because I was surprised by that cyclist's comments. So I wanted to hear some underlying reason for wearing it it one or the other way. Bibs/shorts with their padding do look stupid anyways but they're very practical for protecting one's bottom on long rides. So I thought may be there is a practical reason for the thing mentioned as well but rather then it look stupid I fail to see any.

Wow is this thread useless without pictures.

I would point and laugh at you if I saw you on the road. And then you'd probably smoke me, but I'd still be laughing.
Doesn't your jersey bunch up? I can't imagine it's more comfortable that way. |

If the straps bother you, wear shorts not bibs. If you don't use the pockets, save your money and buy generic sports wicking t-shirts.

Universal reply starts with "F" and ends with "you."

Straps do not bother me. Removing sweaty jersey does. I had shorts and it was great but they sometimes slide and being pinched by the tip of the saddle. Not a nice situation;) I already have those jerseys so I can not possibly "save money" by throwing them away and buying something else
Edit: although I do think it was out of line for the guy to say anything. I see people doing strange stuff all the time, unless it is a danger to me I just keep going. |

Would you point and laugh at fat guys clad in tight clothes on group rides? If someone's waste line is wider then the chest I guess jersey will bunch-up but that is not my case.

I find shaving legs stupid. Just pointing it out Kinda debunks your whole "function over fashion" stance ;) |
