OK, what's the over/under on botto getting banned again?

Here's my $5, put it on the 9 Day box.

You should try to stay unbanned for a month. But if you feel compelled to spill the beans, you should proceed.

That would of course result in the revocation of your Top Secret Pcad Schwag Security Clearance.

Bah Humbug 09-19-09 03:05 PM

Do you two need a room?

Oh, by the way pcad, I saw a CO license plate here yesterday that was [METSWIN]. Thought you'd appreciate that. :thumb:

But really, they did win today.

The handful of female-specific cycling threads I have seen all went downhill pretty quickly.
That is one reason why I personally have not posted any in the Road forum, and the same reason a lot of those in the Women's forum give for not posting in Road.

I wouldn’t have guessed that a female interested in learning more about cycling would be reluctant to post questions or share their thoughts. The amount of vulgar and insulting posts directed towards females seems infrequent from my eyes. I just read them and think “idiot” and move on.

Even if others called out the vulgar posts, I doubt if it would stop or change anything. Some are doing it for shock and entertainment value. There are many lurkers that are probably more reluctant to post for fear of getting flamed or facepalmed.

Maybe you can spread the word in the woman’s forum to encourage participation in RC. The <1% of insulting posts shouldn’t keep you away. If a post is truly vulgar, the mods should immediately pull it.

Sorry, I digress. But when it gets into road cyclists who are interested in going faster, the numbers drop off pretty significantly, to maybe 10-20% of the groups I see being women. Certainly true for the racers, too.

What I think isn't being said here is that
while cycling isn't necessarily a male-dominated activity, internet discussion forums sure as shootin' are. Women just don't seem to be as interested in geeking about bikes on the internet as guys are, and it shows.

Frankly, I don't believe there's a whole lot of women who would WANT to be a part of BF.net's RC forum, even if it was all sweet and nice.

Plus, I doubt a "kinder and gentler" RC forum would be very interesting for many men. I mean, really, internet discussion forums like this one are a guy thing for the most part. I'd be curious if anyone could point me to a bicycle discussion forum that has a very active female presence, and that isn't boring and slow.

Or, for that matter, I'd love an example of ANY discussion forum that has a similar level of activity to BF.net, in which women play a major part in the discussion. Anyone?

I'm taking a lesson from the pcaddie-daddy and replying to my own post.

I feel sad that I've been ignored, and marginalized. Do I need to insist on a "nobody pays enough attention to me here" sub-forum? :(

I highlighted the important parts.

TMonk 09-19-09 03:38 PM

I'm too tired to care about this thread anymore.

It's saturday.

Sholdn't you all be in the same boat as me therefore? Too tired to care about this thread?

getting facepalmed is the initiation ceremony. it is very liberating. after it happens you don't give a damn what anyone thinks anymore.

This would appear to be a discussion purely about the road forum, no? Quite honestly it's held up much better as a mature discussion than it ever would in Foo.

Because it is specifically about the Road Forum ... it's not about Foo or other forums.

I don't know about all the other forums here because I don't frequent them all, but I do know that if a guy posts a ride report in Long Distance or Touring, and mentions meeting up with a girl at some point during that ride, the response is not "Was she hot?" "Did you two hook up?" Etc. That seems to be a Road Forum response.

Now interestingly, the age profile in Long Distance and Touring tends to be a bit older. Is that why there is more of a focus on the cycling aspect of things there, and less on the looks of the women involved? Or is it something else?

+10

But you know, if the mods would simply delete those posts and warn/ban as appropriate, then I'd wager the behavior would stop.

Kind of makes you go Hmmmmmm.

I try to encourage more women to leap and and participate all the time ... even if it is just simply starting by participating in the Weekend Ride thread, and then branching out from there.

But here's the thing ... women are concerned that if they post something, it will either deteriorate into something vulgar and insulting ... or that they will get flamed or facepalmed because they don't know the right questions to ask or right terms to use or whatever. There's a concern about both things.

I think women should just get in here and post ... and I also think that the mods should be right on it if it turns negative toward the women.

The worst I've seen for a female, especially a newbie, is someone taking a few extra minutes to explain something. While I'm sure the infrequent flame has occurred, I believe it to be far from the norm.

Don't you think that might have something to do with it?

And it works both ways by the way. More often than I see women treated poorly on here, I see men jump to help them because they ARE a woman. And I have seen women flirt like hell on here. And just like it might be a small percent of the women that do that, so is it a small percent of the men that scare women away.

Flirting doesn't make it OK to lob inappropriate comments. Obviously there have been women on here who get some weird kick out of said inappropriate stuff and feed their egos on it, but that's as big a problem as anything simply because it doesn't belong out in the open forum.

In the same way that dressing provocatively isn't an invitation for unwanted sexual advances, an avatar/sig that display some bit of sexuality are not a big red flag saying "please be vulgar around me."

:popcorn

This will either quiet things a bit, or throw gas on the fire.

The Weak Link 09-19-09 06:12 PM

I got through five pages of this thread before I realized I was the one who had posted the "Was she hot?" question.

My intentions were misunderstood.

IIRC I was concerned if the woman was febrile: running a fever. H1N1 is spreading and I am vigilant about any febrile illness that might be going around. I used the term "hot" for fear of lapsing into incomprehensible medical-speak.

To the 150 million women of America: I apologize. I apologize for all the acts of unkindness, insensitivity and violence that have been committed by all the male pigs running around.

Anyone got any febrile pictures?

Their mistake is that they think that any dumb questions of theirs will be treated any worse than dumb questions from the guys.

There are no favorites here. Dumb questions are dumb questions, no matter who asks them. Here, they are all equally worthless.

gsteinb 09-19-09 06:18 PM

I don't know what you're talking about.

If the internet has taught me anything, it's that the range of fetishes that people have will always surprise me.

Alright, I just can't let this one go. I've tried, call it a weakness. Anyway, Dr., have you been to any local "hot spots" lately? The men and women aren't decked out in "accentuating" attire to play Kanasta!

Have you ever considered that someone might wear a nice outfit to feel good about themselves? I can assure you from the women I know and have talked to, this is far more often the case than wanting to be ogled by drunk dudes at bars.
