We have thin arms, geberally small chest and smallback. We have ugly tan lines which look awful if we go for a swim. We do have built legs with muscle but the muscles dont aid in runnin or walking as much ad runner legs do.

What do you guys think?

what you mean we, kimosabe?

Some of us have relatively muscular upper bodies, the muscles of which become more defined as we ride.

I won't deny that the upper body shrinks as the riding intensifies -- and the legs become more muscular. However, as I have noted in the past, I am orders of magnitude quicker on the court and field since I began cycling seriously, and I'm a much more explosive jumper.

I owe it all to the cycling. No complaints here.

You're going to have to try harder for a troll ovo. This one has been done several times. I thought you said you were going to try to not get banned this time?

5'9" and 140 or so. But I am not a true roadie nore a purist to cycling. Rock climbing, kayaking, skiing, and backpacking help keep on some of the up body too. I am sure everyone can find something physically they would like to improve. That's what helps us get better.

The standard couch potato football watching 200-300 lbs with a beer belly is so much more appealing to the ladies.

Worked for me. My wife is hot.

I prefer to have a mans physique rather than that of a stick figure. I like to maintain a fair amount of muscle.

Thin arms doesn't mean that body type cannot be strong. The guy's making an adobe house down the street two of them are thin thin thin, but they manage to haul 35-40 lbs adobe blocks (forget 24 reps at the gym) up scaffolding all day and run out of breath much much later than the buff guys. Me myself, even though I have a desk job but can load a trailer with up to 150 bales of hay as fast as big guys. I was just in Pagosa Springs buying hay and the farmer asked if I want to work for him. At the same token, I fail at the weight room at the gym.

Unless you are young and cute, a upper body mass appeals to women

urbanknight 12-15-09 10:43 AM

I think I got into cycling because I already looked like that beforehand.

ya but if you focus primarily on road cycling as a purist or as your main activity. Dont you think the body becomes disproportionate?

What do you guys do to supplement what you miss with cycling? Do you guys go to the gym or do you do home exercises?

OBXCycling.com 12-15-09 10:47 AM

My wife thinks the thin/sickly roadie look is gross.

That's my official excuse.

Flatballer 12-15-09 10:47 AM

Some upper body won't hurt on the bike. Pushups are part of my routine, as is core work. You need decent triceps and pecs and such to stay on aero bars for a long time and rip the bars off during a sprint.

I strength train and still look like a toothpick.
Slim build and all that.

Jesus, 6'3" @ 145 lbs? I'd probably die.

My roommate has that perfect balance between muscular and skinny cyclist. I swear there isn't an ounce of fat in his body, just lots of finely toned muscle.

Due to playing competitive sports my entire life, including in college where we had to weight train and had strength coaches, I do not look like a pro-cyclist. However, riding seriously for a few years and not weight training as much has caused me to lose 15 pounds since college. I still play other sports though and do some occasional light weight training.

I'd much rather have some muscle tone and have a well balanced body for other sports that I still play besides cycling than get so skinny I become a better climber. I'm perfectly happy with how I feel and look (though I feel the winter 5 lbs coming on!!).

And what shouldn't be overlooked is the fact that I do think some people (urbanknight) already "looked" like a cyclist before they started riding like crazy. Others "looked" like soccer/football/tennis/skiing/hockey players before taking up cycling seriously. After many, many years of other sports, some of us are just not going to get extremely skinny, unless we stop all other sports, or stop eating completely. I know I'll never look like Marco Pantani (when he was alive and racing, don't make any sick jokes)

**And this is just my own speculation, but I'd be willing to guess that many middle-aged dudes who take up cycling were the ones in high school who were too skinny or small to play other sports (or thought they were) and cycling appeals to them because it can reward them to for being small and wiry. The skinny dorks of high school are now the ones at the head of the pack! I was always on the small end of the spectrum in the sports I played and cycling is definitely awesome for me because it is the first time that people will say, "Damn, I wish I was your size..." Finally, after many years, my medium-sized-ness is a good thing:) Ha ha, after years of beating me up all the 6'3" 225 pound guys are jealous of my size...and I kind of like it.

I was too busy dropping acid and smoking weed to bother with sports. More important things to do.

It could, I suppose. I can't say that I really care.

SpecialKo 12-15-09 11:47 AM

im a mere 5'9" but i weigh roughly 170. I only have 7 percent body comp so i dont think i look like a roadie. i want to lose another 5 before my first race this year but all in due time. But i am a soccer player and Cross Country state champion runner so i think cycling is right in my line of sports anyway. Just go to the gym 2-3 times a week and do some dumb bell sets of 20/20. easy as pie and keeps you built enough to not worry about the "look".

gv1256 12-15-09 12:17 PM

we have to get pictures up on here, some of these figures are just blowing my mind

silversx80 12-15-09 12:27 PM

Hmmmm, the skiniest pro-tour cyclist makes more money than I do (and I have an engineering degree) and Lance Armstrong has been with hotter women than Tiger Woods.
