Hmmmmm, to do better in 2010 than 2009 which shouldn't be difficult.
2010 goals are
- continue training hard through January.
- have surgery in late Jan, early Feb.
- be back on the bike by March
- race by May
- HTFU and race some crits this summer
All dependent on a quick recovery from #2.

Good luck on your recovery. Your timetable sounds reasonable, depending of course on the nature of your surgery. I had major abdominal surgery (five-inch incision) in mid June and was back on the bike by August 1. Did 14 miles and got steadily stronger with every subsequent ride. I managed to put 1,000 miles on the bike post-op. 1,200 pre-op.
So I might have to adjust my time line.

It took me 5 weeks post-op before I felt consistently good (though still weak.) Of course, I had a lot done to my innards that also helped slow me down, no doubt. The thing about abdominal surgery is that you're not going to be bending over for awhile. And riding in a car hurts because every little bump is painful. Interestingly, I was comfortable on the bike before I was comfortable riding in the car. Probably sheer determination allowed me to ignore the pain.

2009: Cycled a bit more than 2008. Rode in one road race. I finished .
Goals for 2010:
1. Do several races.
2. Keep up.
3. Lose 15lbs (this is closely related to #2 since I get dropped on hills).
I'd put increased wattage as a goal but it'd be ridiculous since I can't measure it anyway.

Due to various injuries I missed at least a few months of cycling but I still managed to bang out over 2,200 miles.
My goal for 2010 is more miles, more speed and more sprinting.

My best accomplishment for 2009 was going over the handlebars on a downhill run and still managing to unclip and land on my feet. Yeah, that's a MTB accomplishment but my big road target for 2009 - a sub-5 hour century got delayed due to a knee injury.
Goals for 2010:
- sub-5 hour century
- complete a 473km ride across the Himalayas at an altitudes ranging from 10k-18k'
- do a sub-hour 40k TT by the end of the year.

2009: really got back into cycling. Major health improvement as far as body fat, my blood pressure and cardio. Started doing 50 mile solo rides on the weekends and did a couple of group rides.
2010: Wanna be able to ride people off my wheel and try to maintain at least 35mph on the final sprints. Right now I can hold 31mph - just for a bit.

2009 was good for me I lost 40 pounds and completed 2 triathlons and did fairly well in them.
for 2010 my goal is
1. Complete an olympic distance tri as well as compete in several other sprints of various lengths.
2. try to do 1/3 more miles than this year.
3. drop an additional 10 pounds

2009: Started riding in July after riding for a few weeks with my hybrid. 5 months after getting my first ever road bike (Allez), I sold it and got my first ever CF bike (Tarmac). Total miles biked this year, only about 2000. I
-Switched from hybrid (had for a few months, road for only about a week total) to first ever road bike (Allez)
-Bought my first bike gear - pedals, shoes, jerseys, bibs, etc. Learned to not feel odd wearing all that.
-5 months after getting my first ever road bike, and after 1600 miles, sold it and bought my first ever carbon fiber bike (Tarmac)
-Learned the difference in power between a double and a compact
-Found that I am better than I mentally think I am at climbing (I figure the fact that I am relatively young at 25 yrs helps also)
-Learned a lot about bikes, bike care, maintenance, etc.
-Went on a lot of group rides
-Rode a metric century
-Lost 25 lbs over a course of 3 months
-Went from B group to A group, albeit dropped a few times, still trying to keep up
2010:
-Attempt to take part in a non-metric century(multiple if possible)
-Do more core exercises, have to balance lower body fitness with upper body fitness
-Perhaps participate in a few races?
-Not get easily beaten/dropped by the A group

Just an observation, when setting goals avoid using wishy washy terms such as "try to", "attempt to", "perhaps", etc etc.
Define your goals in definate terms, "will ride x miles in '10", "will race x times in '10", "will stick with the A ride until I can finally hang on".
Write them down and track them.
It kinda worked for me in 08, not so much so in 09.

You will participate in a few races. Pick them out, register for them and then do them.

You will ride in multiple centuries. A century is 100 miles, if you can ride 60-70 miles solo, you'll finish a century (one pedal stroke at a time)
You will participate in a few races. Pick them out, register for them and then do them.

I'm just very self conscious (I guess it's from being an only child), so I worry in the unrealistic (I hope) probability of competing in a race and being utterly last.
In the A group that I go with, the ones who lead the A group are those who race. I see the correlation
/changes his goal to "Will lead the A group by the end of 2010" ...

Yeah, that is what I have heard also. The metric century was on mostly flat terrain, and consisted of a 32 mi each way route. So I also am confident that a century is doable within my abilities.

And when you have lots of spare time, read CRD's blog.... the sticky and blog helped me more than anything in preparing for my first race.
