Do I have to use the Time Quickest headset?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Do I have to use the Time Quickest headset?

Actually, it's not for me, but for a friend who can get a amazingly great deal on a used XS or XXS Time VX Edge frame, but knows that the extra cm+ (or more) will make the bars too high for what he likes, even with a 17 degree stem.

The top bit on the headset is way taller than regular.

Can he use the top bit -- which is smaller -- from the more expensive Time frames?

Can he use a different headset, or different top bit, or different fork and headset, or what?
Are there any other options?

I know this might sound like too much trouble to some, but the price is so great that it's worth looking into.

I also suggested that he suck it up and put up with the extra height, but he knows what he wants.

Thanks

The quickset system must be used, but if other frames with the quickset system have a shorter top section, it should be transferable to other frame models.

If I understand the system, it's much like the LOOK headfit system. The upper portion of the head tube has internal threads and the top part of the headset screws into those threads to adjust the bearing play. The Time owners manual shows that the holes in the top section are only there to permit turning the top section to reduce play. Any material above those holes could certainly be removed. It might be possible to remove more material, but it would depend on the amount that the upper headset bushing extends above the head tube. The headset top must have at least a couple of millimeters of thickness above the top of the headset bushing (bearing) race.

There is absolutely no compatibility between a Time quickset and a Cane Creek zero stack headset, which is a press fit into the head tube.

I'm sure DaveSSS is right- there is no substitute for the Quickset. However, it's modifieable. Being able to turn it to adjust it would just be an interesting problem to solve. Wiggins' 07 World Star has a very short top cap, custom no doubt. Cycling news story with pics here:

Hope your bud enjoys the bike!
