5'10" using a 42mm. Average shoulders. Previously had a 44mm. Worked well but seems like I have better control with a 42mm.

you guys need to say the measurement C-tC or S-t-S because a 44cm C-t-C is almost a 42 S-t-S. For instance I have been riding a specialized 42 S-T-S and I think I need to get a 42 C-T-C. My shoulders measure 41cm at the joint to my arm. But I could be wrong.

^ do you mind being drafted? - I wonder if bigger men mind being drafted by smaller men, for instance I am smaller than you 5'6" 41cm wide.

I'm only 5' 7" but my shoulders measure ~46 cm from AC joint to AC joint. I use a 44cm 3T Ergonova which, as someone stated earlier, measure about 1.5cm smaller than indicated.

The Ergonova matches its label measurement if you measure it Outside to Outside where you would install the shifters (hoods), then it starts to flare out along the horns to the drops.
I am wondering is I should go to a 44cm... (I measure 41cm from ac to ac)

38 on one bike, 40 on the other. The 40's are deda 42's but they're measured O to O, so in reality they're 40's. Love the newton anatomics.

I use 44s occasionally but prefer 46.
But my only dedicated road bike is a singlespeed. In that capacity wider bars let you "open up" for better breathing, and you get better leverage while climbing. My geared bike is also a cyclocross bike and I use 46cm bars for similar reasons, though more applicable off road. Too narrow bars off road or even on rough dirt roads which I ride regularly are a twitchy mess IMO. I also mountain bike and am used to bars in the ~64 cm range for that application, though it's a different beast.
At this point narrow bars just feel weird to me and there's no way I'd go below 44 for a dedicated road bike even, and I am not broad shoulders (just under 6' and skinny).

5'9" 44cm c-c. I had to replace my regular fuji bars with a 44cm c-c b/c I damaged my bike a week before a tour and needed bars fast. I measured my shoulders and I'm in between a 42/44 so I stuck with the 44. Still adjusting a bit to it, but I think I like the 44 more.

This thread confirms my suspicion for discomfort on my new bike. It's a 56cm Roubaix with bars that measure 44cm from the centers of the hoods. I'm about 5'10" with very narrows shoulders. I just measured myself at 39cm from shoulder joint to joint. Should I try to find 38cm or 40cm bars for maximum comfort and performance?
