Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mavic Reflex ceramic wheels

Anyone else know about these? My neighbor was cleaning out his garage last week and gave me a set.

How well do ceramic rims work? Why do they exist?

He also gave me a pair of Open Pros and a bag of Ultegra and Dura Ace derailleurs.

They are supposed to stop better in wet conditions. Nice free score on the parts.

Sooooo, they might work well for cyclocross or commuting in the rain?

very nice score. reflex ceramics were discontinued by mavic several years ago. the only ceramic model still in production now is the mavic open pro ceramic clincher. reflex ceramics are extremely difficult to find, and people are always after those (albeit a small number of people). i ended up settling for a set of mavic classics ssc tubulars with ceramic coating because the reflex rims are too tough to find. they are good for cross, and classics. i wouldn't really recomend a tubular for commuting, though. additionally, they chew through brake pads pretty quickly. cheers on the find!

here is a link for someone selling some mavic reflex ceramic tubulars a year and a half ago. he was asking for 450 for these rims laced to some dura ace 7700 hubs.

Use the ceramic compatable pads or you will ruin the brake surface, not to mention the noise. Non ceramic compatable pad squeel like a twisted cat. At least mine did.

Will ceramic compatible pads work with regular rims or will I have to swap brake pads every time I swap wheels?
