You know when I see those decals for all the pricey colleges on cars, I always think that if it wasn't for that stupid sticker on the back window, maybe this car wouldn't be a Honda. Maybe it would be a BMW.

(btw, above lady subject apparently has a road bike; that sort of addiction will not help with her six figure loan debts)

Hopefully, she doesn't get into NYU Gallatin and create a major like "women's studies and religious studies".

When I went to NYU the tuition costs were about $4K annually. No kidding.

Did we even have the dollar back then?

This evening I show up at a nearby LBS group ride. I know going in that the ride may be an overshoot because (1) my group riding experience consists of a few small social-type rides, and (2) it's billed as an "A/B" ride with an average speed 2-5 mph faster than I normally ride.

But hey, why not?

I immediately establish my Fred credentials at the outset by (1) showing up late so that I joined the ride in progress a block from the start, and (2) eschewing standard bike weenie style and wearing a tank top.

Anyway, I merged in near the front of the 20 or so rider pack. I really didn't want to be at the front, but I was essentially boxed in for a couple miles so you gotta roll with the flow.

Frankly, being boxed in takes getting used to. I envisioned Pcad-esque crashes.

Things went relatively well for the first four or five miles. I even took a pull. The group was in a fairly consistent two-abreast pace line and it was pretty straightforward to simply follow the wheel in front of you.

But then the organization and speed of the ride seemingly become more erratic. Eventually the four-lane road we had been riding turned into two lane. I quickly succumbed to the rookie mistake of letting too big a gap open up in front of me and got dropped.

But I continued fighting on and rejoined the pack when it got to a couple stop signs.

I was still trying to go with the flow thereafter when I had my most gloriously Fredtastic, "we're going to yell at you" moment. Although I had been studiously observing the group, I had not yet picked up on the paceline rotation. And so, as I was cruising in the right line with a gap in front of me, I was notified--repeatedly--that I needed to be in the left line if I wanted to lay back.

Oh, the humanity.

Shortly thereafter I detonated and was dropped--I thought for good. But when I finally got to the next stoplight (near the half-way point) I happened upon three other dropees. I hooked up with them and availed myself of some drafting as we rounded the far side of the loop and headed back to the bike shop.

We shaved a couple miles off the normal route and eventually rendezvoused with part of the group. I hung onto the back for a while only to get dropped again on a slow climb. (I subsequently learned that they like to dial it up on that stretch. That kind of thing is good to know in advance).

I got saved by one more stoplight; the last couple miles were cool down so I was able to finish the ride not in last place!

Is there a moral to this story? No. But if you're going to ride in a fast group, (1) know the paceline rotation, and (2) stay glued to the wheel in front of you.

The End.

I got "yelled" at once on that ride... which was the first time I went. Some guy told me to lay off the brakes. It was the first time I did a rotating paceline with more than ten people.

I got a D on my physics final. I got the second highest grade in the class. :wtf:

At least I still have an A- for the year.

I have created the Fredicenter of the Known Universe with this stupid thread.

Herbie53 06-04-10 09:33 AM

I have TT butterflies in my stomach and it's still 24 hours before my start. I am Fred.

Tulex 06-04-10 09:33 AM

The most I have ridden with is 2 others, my son and wife. We don't usually rotate, the strongest just pulls for most of the day unless we want a granny ride, in which case the strongest sits back.

patentcad 06-04-10 09:37 AM

I have a TT on Sunday. No butterflies. In fact, I'm riding the 25 miles to the stupid race on my bicycle, signing up, pinning on the number, riding the stupid course and then I'm riding back home.

Relax.

Indeed. Velo Vol's story was the icing on the cake, but it's probably happened to everyone of us at some point when joining a group ride.

Velo Vol 06-04-10 09:53 AM

One other good thing about riding with the group is you don't have to worry about vehicles as much.

Instead of trying to ride 6" from the edge of the road and worrying about every passing car not seeing you, you can cruise in the middle of the lane with the rolling velo roadblock.

I'm sure the motorists love it.

Tulex 06-04-10 09:54 AM

After watching BP try to stop the oil, I seriously can't figure out how those idiots ever got the well in to begin with.

Watching this operation is probably the biggest WTF I've seen in a long long time. Idiots.

I got 94% in chemistry and the group average is 62%, Man I was impressed, I never thought I could hold such an average for the whole term.

Tsuru 06-04-10 10:51 AM

I have a degree in chemistry. I work in fashion/apparel, fabric to be specific. Funny, eh?

The bigger question is.... why did I eat that cake ball?

I can't remember, it was about 20 years, 500+ Nyack Rides and about 250 races ago.

Five people is manageable. Just hang onto the back and bark the directions as needed.

that sounds like gross over qualification for this forum.

Where is the line between Fred and Road Nazi? Is the transition sudden? Will I just wake up one day with great disdain for all that is Fred, or will me and my Fredness just sort of drift apart like Al and Tipper?

Yes. It was called a "Silver Certificate"...he has coffee cans full of them hidden in his back yard...or so the local's say...

mike868y 06-04-10 02:41 PM

Fark. Just found a deep cut in my p3r tires. Put a copious amount of electrical tape on the inside so I can race them this weekend, but it's time for some new race tires.

heckler 06-04-10 02:53 PM

damn you pcad, a TT sunday? I was hoping to see you at the crit in piscataway on sat. I figured it was a nice middle ground between us. I think you should race both days! If I don't crash this year I should be done my 10 races by late July early Aug then we can race cat 4 together pcad! (races are hard to come by when you are not willing to travel more than 75 min)

PS For all VVs talk I think he would be slaughtered in a race, esp given this group ride report. At least coasting is humble.

Hida Yanra 06-04-10 03:24 PM

hey PCad - just PM'ed you on facebook.

word.

time to stop using those useless p3r tyres

Looks like tomorrow's morning ride isn't happening. Friend bummed me into going to his house tonight, and then going into the district tomorrow and mtbing around. Fun, but not good training. No garmin today either.
