Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Winds hit 58knots just as we were getting off the water on the ACats today. I didn't quite make it in before the biggest wind came. The boat lifted out of the water and achieved an altitude of about 35 feet (inverted without the mast touching water). I bailed out at about 10 feet off the deck and swam in. I need another carbon mast. Maybe I'm getting to old for this... but, who isn't.

My FB update on the days catamaran sailing. Possibly the only sport more stupid than cycling. Spend stupid amounts on an all carbon boat and then watch helplessly as it cartwheels itself into oblivion.

What do you mean the boat lifted 35 feet out of the water? It jumped?

I'm trying to wrap my head around the fitness required to finish the Tour de France within the time cutoff, but it's beyond my limited 41understanding. Maybe those 33 geniuses could help us with this.

without me on it the boat weighs only 165# (carbon). The mast is 33 feet tall and missed the water entirely on the first flip. Second flip shattered it. It was a nearly new mast.. now I need another, or perhaps I should just cash out and buy a Cervelo.

That's ridiculously light. A whole boat weighs 165? I should get one of those. Were you on it when it flipped the first time? I see you say you bailed at about 10 feet off the deck, meaning when it was 10 feet up you jumped?

That's crazy.

Also, if you don't mind, what does a carbon mast cost?

No. I had a bout a couple years ago and would rather be fat. The first 24 hours was easily a top five worst day (physically) in my life. I groggily stumbled back and forth between the bed and the bathroom with little concept of time. Let's just say all my bedding needed to be throughly cleaned afterwards.

Hey I'm not that far away, I mean I could drive 5 hours and be in Montreal, or like 9 hour to be in Boston, heck 12 to be in New York...

What was my point again?

Yes, boat rigged and ready to sail is 165#.

I bailed when I realized both hulls were in the air. Not much chance of saving that and didn't want to get tangled in the wreckage. The last mast (about a year old) was $5k (it's insured, but I think they may be getting tired of me). A new ACat is about $20-25k, a good used one is about $12-15k. For that you get to sail at roughly the speed of the wind up to about 20knots (23mph). After that bad things start to happen (usually just a capsize or a pitchpole, but apparently they just fly at 58knots).

They are exceptionally stupid.

That sounds like fun. I just told my mom I want to get a catamaran.

Is an acat the boat completely? 20k isn't too bad for a carbon boat, if it is.

I clearly know nothing about boats.

It is an adrenaline junky sorta boat. We have a club boat that you could try. It's an older design and kinda rickety but it works.

Starter boats can be had for around $3k (now's a pretty good time to buy if you can). There are some other designs racing out of our club as well (F16's and Inter 20's). You could crew on one of those (acats are single handed) to give it a go for zero investment.

PM me and I can line something up.

Thanks for the info, but it's more of a hypothetical thing, or at least a maybe when I'm out of college thing. Gotta stick to cycling for the time being.

If it's good enough outside for boating it means you should be biking.

I was just staring at my mountain bike for a minute.

They're more complex and interesting than road bikes. Disc brakes, suspension. It's cool stuff.

It is a tough thing to balance. I started cycling because I was getting too fat to race Acats, I continue cycling because I have an addictive personality.

MTB's and MTBing are considerably dumber than road cycling. And that's saying something right there.

I'm wondering what I can do to get my post count up.

Does the group have any ideas?

Heck, I can drive to NYC in less than 12 hours.

It's not the kind of trip I'm going to make to get groceries.

By the way, the pathetic, loser, hopeless, mismanaged, bungling Mets lost to the Dodgers 1-0 today. This after their idiot manager yanked the pitcher who had shut out LA for 5 and 2/3 innings over his vehement on the mount protestations. That's when you go the eff back to the dugout and allow your pitcher to keep throwing the shutout you friggin morons.

God help me. Heads must roll on this stupid team. Seriously.

Sick time means dreaded bike maintenance time for Velo Vol.

It took me 20 minutes to pry one of the brake pads out of the shoe.

Maybe I'll tackle the other one tomorrow.
