Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bikes: Something Canadian, something Italian, something American, and something German

I started cycling December of 08. Rode my Vertical full suspension thing from Target everywhere within a mile, thought I was fast, would bike and get muffins every day, got fatter.

In Feb. 2009, I got my first not-POS bike from craigslist. Specialized Hardrock. Got that tuned up, road it all the time, went mtbing for the first time.

Early summer 2009, I got my first road bike. Lotus Grand Prix Luxe. Never rode it that much, prefered the mountain bike.

Upgraded mountain bike over the summer to XT drivetrain, nice fork, everything. Frame was still cheap.

September 2009, saw that my current bike (Giant Defy) was on a ridiculous sale direct from Giant. Got that. ($1100 for a full 105/ultegra carbon bike? Yes please)

Jan. 2010, upgraded crank to DA and fd to Ultegra.

Jan. 2010, peaked at 187 pounds. Upsetting.

March 2010, upgraded mountain bike frame to something aluminum (Specialized Rockhopper) getting it down to 24 lbs.

Now here we are, about a year and a half later after I got on a bike and could ride a mile (barely), and I have close to 5k worth of bikes. Also lost a good bit of weight and am down to a consistent 149 lbs.

That was a heart warming story. I'm going to go take a group photoshoot for everyone to admire my bicycles.

my story starts like yours. I started riding a target mountain bike. I would ride about 8 miles, which would pass a BK and a Starbucks. I gained weight. Then I stopped doing that.

Even the trusty Conti Four Season tires on the Ibis weren't enough to keep my bike from getting a little sideways on the metal bridge on my soggy 50 miler this AM. Never fear, Pcad's superior Cycling Zen bike handling skills saved the day.

It was actually a 49 mile ride, but that's how Pcad rolls, like 49.99 @ Walmart instead of 50 bucks.

I get up at 5:30 some days just to ride 30 miles before getting in to work at 9. I'd have to be riding before sunrise to hit 50 on a weekday morning.
