Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It's talking about bikes on the internet... is arguing about gear really that interesting?

You may have a point....although I was wondering, which is better, campy or shimano?? And what about SRAM? Oh yeah, which is better, rollers or a trainer?

The only SEC nation I know of starts with a G and it ain't Georgia.

That was a good job by Pearl. I have to give him props. Even rooted (between gags) for the Vols as I think Calipari is dirt and UK will soon be on probation.

Pearl is doing a good job but every time I see him I can't get past the image of him at the Lady Vol's game shirtless and painted orange acting the fool in the student section.

My eyes!

You know talking SEC sports ain't a bad use for this poorly spelled rant of a thread anyways?

Heretic. This thread should be moved to P&R.

That guy and that corrupt program belong together. If there were any justice in the NCAA they'd both go down in flames.

If I've got this right Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, and Florida are a combined 24-0 against the SEC West.

That's ridiculous. But we'll be playing on Thursday in the SEC tournament while two west teams get a bye. Lame.

True but that's the way it is. Vandy and Kentucky have been strong Bball schools for some time. TN under Pearl is a perennial contender and FL finally began to get serious about the sport a few years ago so the East is top heavy.

The West? Barkley left Auburn a long time ago.

Just to set the record straight (): as a member of the SEC west, Arkansas won the national championship in '94 and made it to the championship game in '95 (lost to UCLA). Unfortunately, we haven't had a good team since.

True. I had forgotten. Sorry. There has been Bball in the SEC West since Barkley. The coach of those Arkansas teams (can't remember his name) floated around the NCAA for awhile but I don't think he ever had that success again. Is he still coaching?

Nolan Richardson was the coach. He only had mediocre teams after that really good group that had all the success in '94 and '95. He also took Arkansas to the Final Four in '90, but that was before Arkansas joined the SEC. Eddie Sutton started Arkansas' basketball success in the '70's, taking them to the Final Four in '78 with the "triplets" as commentator Al McGuire called them. Had some very good teams in the '80's with both Eddie and Nolan (Nolan took the job in the mid '80's, after Eddie left for Kentucky).

The Razorback basketball program has had some serious problems in recent years, mostly they just haven't been very good. Nolan Richardson was fired several years ago amid controversy I won't go into, and hasn't coached college ball since. He still lives in the Fayetteville area, I believe. Eddie Sutton has battled alcoholism for years, and his career was very much affected by it. I remember when he was hired as Arkansas' coach in '74, he came from Creighton and took Arkansas from playing its home games in a barn to a nationally respected program. Those were his best years, no doubt. We're ready for some more success, losing and mediocrity gets old, especially when there was success before.

The west is garbage right now. Fans at Alabama and Auburn don't care about basketball. I believe they care at LSU, but that program is in bad shape--not sure if that new coach can fix it. People might care at Mississippi and Mississippi State, but those schools are so small that I don't know if they can be competitive without cheating.

Fans do care at Arkansas, but they're in a bad run. I'm not convinced their current coach will lead them out of it.

Contrast that to the east, where just about every school cares and has resources except for Georgia. And heck, if this Foxx pans out (he showed promise this season) he's got talent in Atlanta.

Hey well biked, do you think Pelphrey will get it done there?

The most annoying species around here is the Tennessee football fan/Kentucky basketball fan. There are more than a few.

Like any fan, all I can say is that I hope so; Pelphrey is already the second coach we've had since Nolan Richardson's departure. Actually the third, if you count Dana Altman's one or two day tenure.

I just really don't know. We were fortunate to have a couple of really good coaches (Sutton, Richardson) who were at Arkansas at the high point of their careers. This was over the course of twenty-odd years. Those guys each had "systems" that simply worked. Eddie's in-your-face man-to-man defense was something you could count on, Nolan's "forty minutes of hell" looked like chaos, but it wore the opponent out, time after time. And they each knew how to recruit the players that could get the job done.

I look at the coaches we've had since Nolan (Pelphrey and Stan Heath), and I don't think there's any one thing they do particularly well. I hate to say that, but that's the way it seems to me. Like most fans, I'm tired of waiting for "next year." The sad thing is, the fan support isn't 1/100th what it used to be. Winning cures that, of course. We'll see how it goes.

I actually recalled his name while I was out riding a little while ago. Miserable headwind and I was trying to think about something, anything else. Didn't know Ark was his last gig.

I should add LSU to the list of teams in the West that have had success though I don't know if they've had much since the SEC began divisions.

That would be irritating. Doubt UK fans care much for them either.
