Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Stuck up

Passed an old guy today headed in the other direction. He was riding a bike 5 times nicer than mine and going 5 times slower than me. When I waved at him, he did one of those non-eye contact glares at me and pretended I wasn't there.

Just wondering which of you guys that was.

I was attempting to send you a thought message with instructions on how to make ten million dollars in the futures market. Did it work?

I hate stuck up cyclists. They have all the good gear and think the sun shines out their a$$. I wave and say hello to all riders I see out on the road. If they ignore me I yell don't f$$king wave then.

maybe the old guy who might have worked all his life has just finished working forever, took a tiny small bit of his savings and bought the bike he always wanted, went out for a big long ride with all his new free time and was totally out of it, couldn't think straight let alone be able to lift a hand up to wave.

maybe if you worked 5 times as hard you might have 5 times the money and be 5 times less as fit as you are now.

or you might just end up old and broke and nothing to show for it an not be able to afford any bike at all.

You need to improve your self esteem. Maybe lookign in the mirror every day and saying affirmations?

Anyone else sees an irony of all the "nice guys/gals" who "wave to everyone" getting pissy and sometimes angry when waves are not returned? lol

I'm assuming this is a parody of something but I'm too lazy to search for what thread it may be. If so, weak. If not, lame.

You're a jerk for not waving back so I'm going on the internets to tell everyone how much of a jerk you are.

BTW I wave to ANY cyclist I see, unless I am going down a nasty curvy downhill and I want both hands on the bars.

Would your day have changed had he noticed you?
You see a guy for a few seconds and you have him pegged?
Maybe his friend died or spouse is in the hospital and he stuck out for a ride to get his mind right.
Maybe he is pushing back too soon from an injury and is bummed he can't push it.

Maybe he is an old coot that you saw for 10 seconds. You are getting off easy..... someone has to live with him.

+1. Why does BF obsess over whether or not they get waived at? I usually do (since I don't see many riders), but sometimes I waive before they look at me, sometimes I'm struggling to get up the hill, sometimes I'm messing with stuff, and sometimes I don't want to waive at someone riding some POS bike that isn't worth 20% of mine.

Hmmm. The kind of person who sizes up a person by how much nicer the bike is. And wether or not they are riding as fast. Is there a word to describe that kind of person?

Yes, but you can't say it on BF.

I guess I've grown pretty accustomed to being waved at from living in the south. Just about everyone waves at everybody out where I ride. Even the meanest looking gentlemen in big trucks with big tires give me the "lift your fingers off the steering wheel" wave.

Sorry to have bothered so many of you with my observation.

You know, this topic comes up every so often on this forum, and the discussion is always about like this. So don't take it personally. In fact, that's the main thing about not getting a return on your wave--don't take it personally. I'm with you, I wave to everyone. Some people really light up when they're acknowledged, especially drivers. But if a rider doesn't return my wave, no biggie. As others said here, you never know what's going on in someone else's head.

It was me...if you cried then my day was complete..if not I'll try harder to ignore you while going slower on an even more expensive bike.

We made a film about it:

Funny...I thought the majority of the bikers vs. a-hole driver stories came out of the south.

I guess I can't talk much. In SoCal our doctors are so friendly and they love our bikers so much that they want to give them a ride in their back seats by slamming on their brakes.
