Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I used to think a lot of cyclists I wave to don't wave back but I think what it is is that some just keep their hands on the bars and do the little "finger wave" that I'm not seeing. By the way, I love your "five times nicer bike" and "five times slower" comment. Be honest, if you could afford a nicer bike like that guy was riding, I bet you'd buy it. Just because he has a nice bike and is slower than you means nothing. No matter how fast you are, there are racers out there that could hammer you on a $120 Walmart mountain bike. Let the old guy enjoy his nice bike . . .

Just wondering which of you guys that was.
Looking at your location, it might have been me. If the old guy was riding a silver Giant OCR-C or a red Bianchi, it was almost certainly me. I didn't wave because I hate younger dudes that are faster than me.......which probably includes everyone on this forum.
And you're right, my bike is at least five time nicer than yours.

Hey, us old guys are slow, maybe he waved after you rode past. Or he was bonking. Or said "hi" and you didn't hear.

I wave at everyone and don't watch to see if they wave back. It's probably just as rude as not waving.

Could be those that you think do wave are merely wiping tears from their eyes at the injustice of such a capable rider on such a crappy bike. If they could only catch you, they would probably give you their better bike, if it fit.

I am guilt of not wanting to wave/acknowledge someone first. So I watch everyone as they ride by for that friendly gesture. Sometimes they wait for the last second and I am unable to respond with my cursory nod of the head. Am I a snob? No, just shy.

Maybe he just finished a 150 mile ride averaging 38.4mph and feels like a million bucks.
And on his way back home he is wondering why he rode 150 miles in a straight line instead of a 150 mile loop, so he's just miserable now, hanging his head in shame, trying to get home.

The last two weekends I've ridden my new-to-me MTB down to the hike&bike trail because it's either been too cold or wet for me to want to ride my road bike. I spend some time on the street getting down to the trail and have not yet had a roadie return my wife. I get a chuckle out of it, knowing that it's ONLY because I'm on the MTB and am wearing a Camelbak. These are just residential streets where I almost always get an acknowledgement on my road bike.

The decimal place was a typo, I meant 3.84mph, but it doesn't matter!
