Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Trunk Mount Bike Rack - Help Please

I have an Infiniti G35 Coupe, and I'd like to get a bike rack. From what I've seen, there's not many choices for this model car. I am leaning toward the Saris Guardian 2 though. Does anyone else have the same car (or Nissan 350Z), and if you do, how do you carry your bike? Secondly, does anyone have any experience with the Saris Guardian 2? My wife drives an SUV and we have a bike rack for it, which is what we currently use when we go ride. However, we have begun to ride with different groups, so we need to be able to transport bikes in two vehicles.

I have a Saris for my BMW 330ci (coupe). It works well. Just don't drive too fast, the bikes back there do impair your handling.

Thanks - I'll try to keep it in double digits when the bike is back there. Does your car have a spoiler? Mine does and my biggest concern is getting a rack that misses the spoiler.

According to Saris's website fit guide, the Bones will not fit my car. I'm going to my LBS today and hopefully they will have some racks I can try out on my car. If not, I may have to order one and send it back if it doesn't fit.

I'd be amazed if the regular Saris Bones doesn't fit your car. I use a Bones 3 on my BMW 328i and my wife's Honda Odyssey. It's very adjustable. I can't us the trunk in my car with it installed, but we can use the rear hatch on the Honda with it installed. If I didn't have the Bones 3, I'd probably buy the RS if I had to do it over again. I could leave it installed and still use my trunk.

I have a humongous wing on the back of my car and the Saris Bones rack can fit there. The G35 should have no problemo. It's very very adjustable.

I would also like a bike rack for my Fx35, however I wonder whether to go on the top or the back. The Infiniti sits sort of low so I have thinking roof mount, that way I don't have to remove it, is it worth the hassle to mount it on the roof? Or should I go off the tail end.

I went to my LBS tonight and they had a Bones 2. I tied it and it fit fine. I was pretty excited and went ahead and bought it. My only concern is the Bones is made to rest on the bumper lip, but my car doesn't have a bumper lip. Either way, it seems to hold fine. I'll provide an update after I use it a few times.

My gf has a 350Z and got a Saris Sentinel 2. That rack is crap-tacular, but it's the only one on that the Saris site says fits, I believe. The foam pads move around and cause the metal parts to brush the paint, the thing is hard to secure (even using the proper straps, which you have to buy separately for hatchback/sport-type cars) and still wobbles at speed, bikes move a lot of small dips and bumps, etc. It has scratched her car in a couple of places (I was able to take it out using good polish) and slightly broken part of the plastic around the license plate holder. Go see the rack in person and try to get something with 6 straps (as opposed to 4) if you can. I have a Thule 6 strap for my 330 and it is perfect.

Update - I took back the Bones 2 and got the Guardian 2. The Guardian 2 fits my car much better (which I guess is why they recommend it for my car - go figure).

I just had a hitch installed on my '05 Altima. LOVE it! Could not stand using my old trunk mount any more. Uhaul said they can mount a hitch to just about ANY car. You can barely tell it's there when the rack is not on and best of all the rack fits into the trunk when I'm not using it.

for those using the Saris Bones 2 or 3 rack what is you procedure for preventing trunk damage? i ask, because i never really paid much attention to wiping off the trunk and rubber feet/arms of the Saris before installing it on my maroon chevy impala. i made short trips and long trips with multiple bikes on the rack with success.

except for the paint damage to the top of the trunk. is it as simple as wiping off the trunk and rear leg bumper pieces prior to install? give me your tips and tricks. later.

If there's a way to get a hitch receiver on your car, hitch mount racks are really the way to go.

About 1/3 of the people I've spoken to with roof racks have driven into a garage/low clearance sign with their bikes on top.

Trunk mount racks *will* scratch your car. A good quality one will be fairly easy to fasten, and should be secure, but I'd trust a receiver and a cotter pin over a half dozen straps any day.

Also, some trunk mount racks can lock to the car, and then lock up your bikes. Tray type racks won't scratch your bike frame because they're holding it down by the wheels. They will also be compatible with just about any bike under the sun.
