Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Froze Toes 2011 Cat 5 Road Race. Sorry that writeup in GC doesn't allow for making paragraphs apparently. The full write-up will also be in the Road Racing section if anybody cares to read it with real paragraphs. Came in 3rd.

We had snow, so I've been slacking, but I got out on Monday night for a bit of a ride. Better than nothing. Bike was 45 pounds with water & gear, and I ended up needing some of it since the next snowstorm arrived mid-ride...

Went out with a friend hoping to put on about 45 miles. We ended up with 41 miles which is close enough I suppose. He was mopping the floors with me last year evern time we rode but I was dropping him on a majority of the hills and was pulling him 90% of the ride. Made me happy with my fitness. He had a lot less saddle time this winter than last and I had a lot more than last winter. Kinda crazy how much a little work pays off. He is naturally better on the bike than me though so he will surpass me by the end of the season which is fine.

The Tour de Phoenix route today. It's one of my usual rides in reverse, and much harder this way. Head winds and steep climbs are on the way home.

Weather forecast was for crazy wind and a bit of rain, so I thought I'd take the day off and go for a ride in the hills. Some dodgy moments on the way home with a crazy sidewind.

Descending Pyramid Intervals starting at 20 minutes and cutting in half each time with 3-4 minutes rest between sets. Was planning on going out and getting 60 miles in today but it was still below freezing when I was supposed to go. I'm not into that kind of torture so it was another trainer day for me.

Got it while the getting was good - before dusk. Had to get some energy out. 20 min warmup beforehand and 20 min cooldown after.

https://connect.garmin.com/activity/70964569

Pleased about laps 1 and 3, but 2 I lost focus on the the climb. Still struggling with realizing my full climbing potential but I'm getting there.

Had some crazy weather: a big and random headwind, as well as a freak dusting of snow.

Today's ride. Was worried about day light time left so did a different/shorter route than planned, less climbing.

Today was 2x20 minutes tempo. It shouldn't have been nearly as hard as it was but I'm still paying for yesterday's VO2 max intervals.

Averaged 246 and 250 watts for the intervals. Tempo range is 215 - 257.

I don't think it is as bad as it appears. On the first 20 minute interval it went from 142-152 and on the second 20 minutes it went from about 149-159. A couple of the peaks were probably from standing up for a bit to give my bum a rest.
