These videos are awesome.
I love your video's UMD, I keep referencing them as I get ready to start racing next season. |

I love your video's UMD, I keep referencing them as I get ready to start racing next season. The video is climbing "Haskins Grade" on the first lap of the Pescadero Road Race. My average power for the climb was about 4.9 W/kg. For cat 3, ee went up this climb 3 times, the last time was the finish of the race. |
Nice vid umd, I prefer the new mounting on the stem. With regards to padding, you can try bar tape and/or cork.

Thanks, here is a new one. Tried a new mounting position below my stem, seemed to work well, less jittery but more rocking when I stand to climb, and more vibration noise (need to put some padding between the stem and the camera). I need to get a mount made, I was using zip-ties to secure it

I am seriously digging the view from the stem mount. Can you post a couple of pictures of how you mounted it? I would help quite a bit for some of us trying the same. |
Krikey! The only way I would've made it up that climb is bungie-corded to one of the other riders. :) Looks like an awesome road to ride, though.
'Nother good vid, umd! |

wow. someone is suffering behind you. someone is going to need a key to unlock those arms.

Another video, this is earlier in the lap, on Stage Road out of Pescadero. The crest of the fist climb, the descent, and the second relatively short climb.
|
Last one for today, this is the descent immediately following the climb in the first video.
|
Way cool descent! Wish we had descents like that here. Heck, I wish we had hills here! :)
Was that brake squeal? It was during braking, but it didn't really sound like brake squeal I've heard before; fingers on a chalkboard don't bother me, but that sound made me cringe. :) |

Mystic Velo Crit, May 16, 2010, Ninigret Park, RI (site of a few races a year). I ran out of memory due to still learning how to use a Mac, but I got 15 minutes worth. Recon lap with a funny, 1.5 laps of "action", and that's about it. Some notes on wind and protection and stuff. I wish I had the finish because I got 2nd, but c'est la vie.

Regardless of it being short, that was still a great video CDR. There were a lot of attractive kits in that video (of all things I notice that). Congrats on the podium.
UMD, great video. It was very interesting to see how different people approached the climb. All of the guys seemed determined though, it was great to watch. |
umd - does the gradient meter lag behind? I noticed along a section on the last video's descent where you were going 50+ mph and the gradient was relatively moderate.

My experience with programming the gradient into my overlay app was that you have to implement some type of "smoothing" algorithm so the number does not jump up and down a couple of times every second. The downside to this is that it will have a lag... the more "smoothing" you implement (less jumpy), the more lag there will be. The gradient is also dependent on Garmin's elevation data which is only an approximation at best (using the barometric pressure or otherwise).
Finally gradient calculation is a function of distance traveled and change in elevation... this means the calculated gradient is already in the past when you display it on the overlay. Add the smoothing algorithm and you have even more lag. There is a solution but that would require more coding. |
Yeah I do a 3s rolling average. I think the gradient is pretty close to reality in the videos but in that case the speed was just wrong. There were a few spots where what it recorded cut a big corner of and it thought I was going much faster. Also it records huge speed spikes on occasion which I usually edit out but forgot.

Last nights chaingang, video courtesy of Matt Clinton. i'm the one in red and blue (immediately in front of the camera, not the one on the right) who gives everyone a kicking at 6.14 and tries it again at 9.00. my legs failed the second time. the guy in white next to me is the county's TT champ. Matt proceeds to show us all how its done (in our defence, he was national hill climb champion in 2008) - oh and the kid at the end in a white british cycling jersey and red shorts causing trouble at the front is only 16, good mate of mine, props to him he's got a lot of potential.

Sprint at the end of the "hammerfest" lunch ride. I haven't done it in many months, and it was lightly attended yesterday.

No racing for me lately, but here's a fun video from a recent ride where I encounter two red tailed hawks.
