KS and MO roads are pretty terrible. It's a lot easier to have nice roads when you don't have snow and ice half the year freezing and thawing, creating cracks and holes that get even worse as the cars come pound them repeatedly. A smooth road really is a rarity around here.

I was able to recover the video from Tuesday's "Hammerfest" lunch ride, but it took a lot of time and running it through several different programs.
It was even lower turnout than last week. Ryan, Jeff, Jason, Adam, and Gary (on a mountain bike!). Jim joined us after Glen Annie. I took the first "sprint" to the end of Glen Annie with a 1K attack. Second highest 1 minute power for the season. Coming into the Calle Real/Farren sprint, I was mesmerized watching Gary spinning at a bazillion RPM I missed the jump. At the end I was on Ryan's wheel and out-jumped him (he said he missed his shift), but Jim came around me at the end. Reversal of roles from last week...

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/38658272

The first video is Glen Annie. My attack is about 20 seconds into the video, the rest is fairly boring and you can't see much because my hands block the camera in the invisible aerobar position. That's Gary on the mountain bike, he would normally slaughter us unless he is doing something crazy like riding his mountain bike...

This clip picks up on Cathedral Oaks just after Winchester Canyon Road. We have to slow a bit through the construction zone and then it is a downhill run on Calle Real towards a sprint to Farren. Watch Gary spin like a madman to 40mph!

The last few minutes of the ride, leading up to the final sprint at Fairview. Last week I took the sprint but Ron gave me a hard time for just sitting on wheels the last few minutes and hanging Jim out on front for a while. This time when I saw nobody was pulling through after Ryan and Jim, I went up and took a monster pull. Running up to the sprint I was on Ryan's wheel, he accelerated after Jeff took off on the right side, and then I jumped. Way too early because Jim came around and I was out of gas. Pretty much reversed from last week. That was a 30 second power record for the season, 680W or so.

Put it up in the race section since it's really about that. But I'll post here too, although the racers may not necessarily peek here.

Dude I think you race against my cousin. His name is Mike and he rides for Svelte Cycles. Did you do the Keith Berger Crit in East Hartford last weekend?

I did - it's on my helmet cam list of races to do. I have to wait for more hard drives to arrive though - I'm totally out of disk space at the moment.

Svelte's kit - is it mainly black with script type lettering?

Yeah with stripes of defferent shades of green.

Yeah with stripes of different shades of green.

They work well together, get things organized, chase/attack as a team. I like that.

Wow, nice job by that brauer guy to keep it upright.

Yeah that was amazing.

cdr - this might be a stupid question, but I thought United was a pro only team? I've seen their kits in a few videos of yours.

Obscene 07-01-10 01:53 PM

Finally caught all 3 copperhed vids. Nice work! I was rooting for you on the last lap trying to pull back the break during the climb. That took some balls my friend

If you don't race around here it's hard to tell. "We Stand United" is an all category type team. Okay, at least Cat 3s. Maybe Cat 4s too.

There's also a Colavita rider or two in the 3s. That's a bit disconcerting at first.

Why was Gary on his mountain bike. Seems pretty impressive that he can keep up in the paceline with huge slicks.

Ah, alright. Thanks for clearing that up.

Training for nationals I think. When he comes out on a TT bike it just becomes a motorpacing session.

Copperhed51 07-04-10 04:28 PM

Raced my first crit today. Did much better than in my 2 circuit races. I am simply not a good climber. A LOT of crashes in this Cat 5 crit at the Tour of Lawrence though. Here's the one I caught on the helmet cam. I had to brake super hard to avoid it and was impressed by how much my Reynolds Assaults with the Swiss Stop yellow pads slowed me down under emergency braking. Anyway, enjoy the carnage.

Looked like he MIGHT have touched wheels with the guy in front. Or he was just squirrly as ****.

Was everyone alright?

These videos are more exciting than watching the TdF on Versus. At least we get to see some real racing, and don't have to put with up idiotic, biased, commentary.

Maybe he touched the guy's wheel, but it looked like he had space to move on the inside to avoid that.

That's what I was thinking too. I think he just got nervous...maybe he thought he was going to hit the curb and tried to move out a little?

I talked to the first guy he took out and he had some road rash and bar tape and stuff torn up but other than that, he seemed alright. Didn't catch up with anybody else. Did talk to some guys from other crashes and they were all ok.

Clearly you haven't read my commentary in my videos

From looking at the video several times, it does not appear he touched wheels. It does appear however as if he thought he was going to leading him to rapidly move to the right to avoid it.

Versus has no commentary. It is a 12 hr daily Lancefomercial lasting 30 days (it started for a week before the tour) with the Tour de France as a background. It is incredibly annoying to hear them to say the least.:notamused:

Said it better than me. Have you noticed how the only bikes they comment on are Treks?

umd 07-04-10 05:48 PM

It's hard to tell if he touched wheels with the guy. But either way he didn't start turning in when everyone else did, so effectively that caused the crash. Really sucks for the guy that was ahead of it and got taken out like dominoes with the bike going flying.

umd 07-04-10 05:51 PM

Anyway, I worked on my video from tuesday's "hammerfest". Previously I had put up some clips, but now I have up a full edited version with commentary and some music. I rode with Gary (the guy on the mountain bike) more today and he said that he is training for elite mountain bike nationals in 2 weeks and was using the ride for motorpacing. This is a pretty hard ride as it is and he said it was about 50% harder with the mountain bike. Most normal people would not have been able to do it, for sure.

That guy sent me a message on youtube. Turns out he's the guy that pretty much got taken out on the climb in the first part of my other race video. He seems to have some awful luck. I need to stay away from him in the future!

Blackdays 07-05-10 12:08 PM

Wow, I thought I was pretty good at spinning. The guy on the MTB is insane.
