What this really your first crit? 4th place and no crashing? Wow! Was there a close call/near crash with the 328 guy at 1:28? Looks almost as if you grazed him. |

All I could think of watching those videos is that they really need to hold number pinning clinics for new racers.

Some of them resembled sails, which couldn't have been helping at all. |
Cooperhead, I'm really enjoying your videos! Keep on making them!
Congrats on the 4th place sir, more so because it was your first crit. |

Thanks. Yeah, never done a practice crit or anything so it was my first crit of any kind. It was a pretty close call at 1:28. I was yelling to him that I was on his right a bunch of times and I really didn't have anywhere else to go and definitely didn't want to slow down since I was feeling good and in a decent position. We didn't touch and hopefully I didn't piss him off too bad. No harm no foul I figure. Anyway, I really enjoy crits and was happy winning a prime and finishing 4th. Almost won 2 of the 5 primes but decided not to sprint against the 2 other guys for that one since I was thinking ahead to the finish and didn't want to overdo it too early.
Nice clip and nice race! cdr |

Raced my first crit today. Did much better than in my 2 circuit races. I am simply not a good climber. A LOT of crashes in this Cat 5 crit at the Tour of Lawrence though. Here's the one I caught on the helmet cam. I had to brake super hard to avoid it and was impressed by how much my Reynolds Assaults with the Swiss Stop yellow pads slowed me down under emergency braking. Anyway, enjoy the carnage.
Then the guy in front of you (#376) tries to avoid him and ends up unbalancing himself. If he'd done kind of a shoulder check kind of move it may have worked out. All this "on the hoods" riding makes me really nervous! Ironically the guy that gets distracted is on the drops. The racers are also impressively (maybe not the right word) close considering how much movement there is in the field. cdr |

I've been working my way backwards on this. The guy who "initiates" the crash (#357?) touches wheels with the guy in front. It looks like he was wiping his face/eyes and got distracted - didn't turn in quite the same as everyone else.

It seems like #357 turned his handlebars to the right just before the crash (even though the turn was towards the left). Do you think he was trying a countersteer maneuver, but it was too exaggerated and therefore he went outside of his line?

No
Seems like he was distracted, didn't turn in when everyone else did, realized he was about to touch, and tried to avoid the wheel in front. |

umd, you videos are amazing! adding all those fancy gauges really makes it interesting and even a compelling watch!
You might have answered this question before, but how much did you end up spending setting up the whole thing and how much time does it take to compile a video? |

Thanks. The camera was about $250 and the software was I think $250. Memory card was $50. I can make a video pretty quickly if I just take a clip, it takes longer if I edit it and add commentary, etc. It's just a matter of converting the garmin data to a format the software understands, then determining the sync point.
Which Garmin unit do you use? |
705 with a Quarq power meter.

So I had some fun the other day, and did two runs of a descent on video. I noticed that my times were nearly identical and got the idea to composite them together. It's pretty cool to see how close they were on some of the turns.

Thats cool stuff, man! :thumb:

Great Video! |
Here's a video of my (short) commute. Probably not nearly as interesting as the other videos in this thread. The camera I used was a very cheap Polaroid i739, which is a digital camera. I used a toe strap to strap it to my handlebars. |

Wet race. I learned the hard way that the ContourHD is NOT waterproof. I couldn't use the cam the next day at a dry race because of the condensation inside the camera.
I almost fell, on my own, in every bend in the course, and decided that I better sit at the back for safety's sake. Started moving up with about 1/4 of a lap to go, led through the last turn, and screwed up the sprint. There was a minor distraction where two guys got into it on the right side. The antagonist actually lost control, hit the other guy's derailleur, and crashed into a lamp post. He then got up, chased down the other guy on foot (the other guy's derailleur was broken), threw something at him (his bike or his wheel), then proceeded to stomp on the broken derailleur guy's rear wheel. This is why you see the golf carts, carrying EMT folks, driving all over the place - they were chasing one another around the course. I only catch the initial crash on camera. The rest of it happened in various areas off course. Text version here. |
Commute back today. |
