my headtube has no gap for me to strap the flex mount sadly, otherwise i would definitely use it there. i considered their handlebar mount, but mine isn't circular, it's kinda flat so it wouldn't fit. the behind the stem position is ok, but it cuts a lot of the picture out and sometimes gets in the way of my knee

i'll take a look at those other video settings

(btw that youtube account is really old so i know the name is really dumb)

Those SDBC kits look familiar too. It's the same kit you see in the beginning of kleinboogie's videos.

We were in the same "race" so you'll see a lot of the same riders in my other vids. I'll be putting up some video from it tonight and later this week. Fun ride, no crashes so it was good.

Here's a video with music of last weekend's descents into the canyon on Hwy 49 and Old Foresthill Road. I used Contour's site for this video, since the footage was recorded with the ContourHD on the helmet mount. Vimeo's free account only lets you upload 500 MB per week, so I couldn't put it there.

The helmet mount lets you see more of the scenery than the chest mount, but I still prefer the chest mount for climb footage since I move my head around too much while climbing. Also, I think the chest mount footage looks faster due to the camera being lower to the ground.

I left enough raw audio in to make it obvious that it was a bike descent and not a car driving down the hill. :D

I read in your post before you use a gopro chest mount? What adapters do you use to make that fit?

I did not take this video or am in anyway associated with it. however it is pretty nuts. This is Fred Rodriguez dive bombing the North Gate descent of Mt Diablo. I've done this descent maybe a 50 times and maybe at 1/3 of this speed.

I gotta say, that sort of thing really does give me a thrill. Raced motorcycles a bit when younger and hitting an apex and not losing any momentum- either on a motorcycle, a bicycle or on skiis is for me, right up there alongside sex for things most fun in life.

always tricky in a public setting like this where uncontrolled factors can come into play, and you could see that these guys were very good at leaving a certain percentage for error for oncoming traffic. Stuff can always be thrown at you out of the blue--a mechanical, or someone oncoming totally fudging a corner (remember Freight, that vid of yours with the guy who muffed the apex coming down towards you) so in situations like this, one always has to leave a few more % of safety exit. Still dangerous, but still damn fun to watch.

thanks for putting that up, made my evening.

It's a good illustration of the goodness of late apexes vs early ones and how poor cornering hurts descending speeds. I'll just say that Fred Rodriguez corners well.

A cool thing about descents is that most normal people/riders can descend as fast as a pro, if there are a lot of turns, because it's more about cornering lines and (higher) weight than it is about fitness. It helps if you have decent top end power for accelerating out of turns, but otherwise it's not about physiological talent, it's about technique.

I have to admit I'm a bit averse to crossing even a dotted yellow on such curves, but after watching a bit of it I understand.

Here is a descent out of the mountains and into some farmlands in between the Appalachians and Alleghenies in PA.
The rider in front who just peaces out was my touring partner for 08.
edit: By the way, I was carrying around 55lb of stuff in panniers and racks.
Edit: Forgot to mention this was shot in 2008 before I had any action cams. My P&S Digital camera mounted to my handlebars with a rig I made.

so X, I gotta ask--why the heck wasnt there banjo music or country or something playing to go along with that? as that was the most fracked up music choice Ive seen in a while ;-)

oh, and frack you!
frack you

frack you

frack you

really inspired lyrics huh?

archimeaties 02-02-12 09:31 PM

Here's a descent of the always-fun highway 84 on a day when I was lucky enough to encounter no traffic on the day down. Lots of variable light and shadow which I think adds to the impression of speed.

That's right (I'm the author). Enjoy!

You developed this? I just downloaded it. I will check it out for sure when I have some time to really play with it. Thank you for making it Free! I am a developer too, so if I notice anything to pay attention to, I'll send you a pm. Fantastic work!

I was just messing around. Besides if you listened to the last 45 seconds of the song it says, "If you don't like my music, then F*uck you!" ;) it's funny usually I do you use country or Indy Rock and people yell at me for the music being too "soft and gay". Definitely can't please everybody all the time. I did almost use the Crash Test Dummies for you Canadian music lovers. Maybe next time.

Thanks for doing all that work! I may use this on my trainer. I'll have to explore use on clips too.

X-LinkedRider 02-03-12 10:05 AM

This means I need to think about getting a power meter huh? or is cadence good enough? Looking into a garmin package anyhow.

Hope you like it! Unfortunately, I've found the trainer usage to be less compelling than I'd hoped ... at least w.r.t. watching race videos. The power in a race tends to be too variable compared to what you do on the trainer. Watching a climb or a time trial feels more natural. Maybe if would be better if I were driving a load generator instead of modulating the frame rate.

You can certainly use it to display just cadence, speed, distance, but primary design goal was to show the power data in a useful way, so that's what it's best suited for. Also good for documenting your Strava KOM bids. :-)

Here's a short clip of one of the most epic descent routes i've ever been in on. Any Nor Cal cyclist should know of this route, at the top of Hawk Hill.

It starts with an 18% grade drop with 2 almost 90 degree turns. My camera crapped out before the end.

Note: i'd turn the volume down a bit. I'm still working on that and also finding a suitable mount location on my bike.

That view would distract me and ultimately be my demise.
