Was there a constant 40kph sidewind or is the camera just mounted at an angle? :D I was expecting you to fall over, and then when that dualie drove by and obliterated you with that black exhaust I was surprised you didn't collapse. :)

Yeah, I heard him coming so I closed my mouth and held my breath. then flipped him off, since he totally did it on purpose IMHO.

I started carrying 2 rocks in my jersey now for *******s just like him. Water bottles don't do them big trucks justice, so I have resorted to trying to break out a window. Only when I am not in my team kit of course. Thus far, only one idiot has stopped after I pelted their vehicle, and when he stepped out of the vehicle he realized I wasn't one of them whippet cyclist. I guess 6'2" at 230LBS, football linebacker style, kind of scared him back into the car. At that point I became the ******* and tormented him at the red light in front of his girlfriend. Awww!

That's pretty dumb

Oh I will agree that it is pretty dumb, but I am tired of these Chicago people and their attitudes. I have a fighting background, so I think that makes it worse when an idiot does **** like that to me when I am riding. This year though seems to be a much higher incident rate thus far. The past 2 years, I could count on one hand the amount of times I was buzzed. As a matter of fact, I got buzzed by wannabe gang bangers the other day in a local town and I smacked their car with a water bottle. Just so happens a cop witnessed the whole thing, so I thought I was screwed, but I really didn't care. Nope, cop busted the wanna be gang bangers, and about 10 minutes later he pulled me over to tell me the good news. In the long run, I think I have the right to defend myself. If I hit the wrong person and get my ass handed to me, it wouldn't be the first time for a good ass whoopin' and I am sure it won't be the last. If you give me space and let me ride, I will wave and give you a thumbs up, and if I catch you at the light I will tell you thanks and that I appreciate your safety and driving style :)

I don't want this to turn into an A&S thread, please go there if you want to talk about throwing rocks.

The camera is mounted on a handlebar clamp and it is is hard to get lined up without a view finder. Maybe when I set it up next time I'll use a bubble level to adjust the mount.

Where else are people mounting the cameras? I think umd had his mounted on the underside of the handlebars. mine is on top of the handlebar, I was thinking about mounting it to the front on the frame right over the front brake, the vibration is pretty insane on chipseal.

ptle 05-07-10 01:03 PM

umd... that looked like a lot of suffering and pain. I don't have a powertap/SRM, but I can't hold a pace for much longer if my HR goes above 177. It seemed like you were around there for a while with that one guy trying to catch the break.

Mine is on my helmet. The vibration is not too bad if I use a secondary strap.

It was definitely a bit of suffering, but remember that you can't compare HRs between people.

And now for something completely different...

There is a weekly swim/run series here than runs May - August. For the last few years, I have volunteered to ride lead (think like the moto in bike races) in exchange for free entry for my wife. I thought it would be cool to get some video of the run, so I rigged my camera under my saddle facing backwards. The result was interesting:

CyciumX 05-07-10 09:12 PM

Nice editing job.

I actually have a saddle thats flush enough underneath that I was able to put a sticky mount there for my reverse shots (even the one that survived highway 17). That damn 3M stuff is insane.

I was joined by another guy and kept going way harder than I should have and was subsequently dropped shortly after the group caught me. It was a monumentally stupid move, but it was fun.
...

Ouch. It was really painful looking on those gauges. Helps me to realize how badly I suck with my meager FTP.

Mine is mounted over the front brake using an L-bracket through the brake binder bolt. Bolted to the L-bracket is a custom mount I designed for the ContourHD and produced with a 3-d printer. A little bit of rim tape between the brake and the bolt protruding beneath the mount controls vibration well.

Now that's clever. What do you do that you have access to a 3d printer? Would you be able to make more and sell them?

It had a secondary tether that I wrapped around the saddle rails. It fell out of position, but not to the ground. No damage to report.

mounting under the handle bars

I also have the contour and initially used the helmet cam but it bugged me. I ended up modifying the goggle mount that comes with it by drilling a few holes to take zip ties and mounted it under my handle bar nearest the stem. I thought it would show a lot of vibration so I used some of that foam they make water pipe insulation out of (home depot for a few bucks) and used that to absorb vibration - works pretty well and is more unobtrusive. One guys I was riding with thought it was just a bike light. The only downsides so far is you can see my right hand a bit on the levers and the picture becomes a bit hard to watch when sprinting/climbing when standing due the the bike moving from side to side. The plus side is that I THINK it will be more protected in a crash, it gets a good angle on other riders in front, and it avoids my constant moving of my head - down to check the computer or gears (not sure why I do that so much), and side to side to check for other riders. Can post a pic of the mount setup if anyone is interested.

I am very interested. Can you please post some pics. I am buying this camera and interested in non-helmet setup with the leas shaking.

here are a few pics mounting the vholdr on the bars.

Used the goggle mount

1) removed the straps
2) drilled small holes for the zip ties
3) used some foam between the bars and the mount to reduce vibration

I wish I were that lucky, today during my ride the official mount for handlebar that go pro makes sheared off during the ride without be knocked or anything. Next thing I knew I was picking up the camera and protective case of the road. The camera went flying at least 15 feet into the shoulder brush. The camera appears to still work. I kinda wish it was recording at the time to document it.

I don't have work-related access to a 3-D printer. Rather, I used shapeways. My model is publicly available, so you can order from them directly:

http://www.shapeways.com/model/83823/contour_v7.html

The model isn't perfect. You have to drill holes in the bottom for attachment screws. It holds the camera firmly, but it's not so tight that the camera can't shake loose on rough roads. I use rubber bands to make sure it stays put. It has a groove on the outside that was intended for a zip-tie, but that didn't work very well.

You know, I would bet money that in 20 years, Lance Armstrong's kids are going to have all that data and more protected onto their 2030 Oakley M Frames at the Tour de France, which will actually take place primarily in Belgium and Monaco because France was destroyed in the Human-Zombie War of 2013.

Actually, scratch the last part; I would only bet money on part about the HUD...

Last weekend's group ride:

Ride stats: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/31850496

I forgot to turn on the video after a pit stop approx 1/3 of the way. This is the problem with the GoPro HD, there is no way to figure out if the thing is running or not unless you check the blinking light in front of the camera.
