Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rain, it's dark and car lights

Last two nights as Im taking the long rural way home from work and school it's been raining and dark. No problem, I ride in all weather from -5C to 45C, but its the stupid car drivers who have their lights on hi-beam that are blinding me, literally.

Can't they see my flashing lights?

Do I?:
1: Swerve across towards them to scare the hell out of them?
2: Spit on them as they pass?
3: Carry a pocket full of big bolts and smash their lights
4: Turn my lights off?

What would you do?
And don't say, "Don't ride at that time"

Bikes: everywhere

For me, none of the above. I just deal with it. Every once in a great while I'll aim my light at them.

Many cars and most pickups will blind me even with their low beams.

I tend to flash my magicshine into their eyes if they have the high beams on. Most idiots tends to turn on the high beams when they see a cyclist not realizing they just blinded him. Same as the idiots that blast the horn 2 feet from your ear drum to let you know they're passing.

edit: Don't ride at that time.

edit x2: i had to.

Get one of these.

Just make sure you stay out of their way when they start blindly swerving around...

Forgot to say that I'm horribly myopic and the rain on my "Coke bottle" lenses tends to make the light reflect/refract through them so much it's like I'm riding through an insane kaleidoscope......STOP RIDING?

NO WAY.......I'm sick of the "wrapped up in cotton wool crowd" who won't ride when it's wet, hot, cloudy, windy, too flat, too steep, too far, too much lightning etc etc.

Ignore it, or get a Magicshine on your helmet and point it at their face. It's even more annoying when you run into a biker on the MUP at night with 500 lumens and he doesn't care to shield his light or point it down.

I ride in the dark and I ride in the rain, but I don't ride in the dark and rain, unless forced to so I can get home. No one - rider or drivers - can see for squat. It's worse in the cars with their windshields making thousands points of lights, along with wet roads reflecting all the car lights, regardless of how they're aimed. Poor biker with a blinkie hasn't got a chance against all that car light glare. The drivers will hardly see you if at all.

There is no fix for stupid. I would figure a way to deal with the situation gracefully.

yes

OP, is there a short way with slower traffic, possibly a bike path to get home? Not riding on a dark rainy road reflects good judgement, not the lack of balls.

Bikes: More than I need, really.

So the drivers are putting on their hi-beams so they can see you better in a dangerous situation, and you're getting upset because their lights are too bright?
You're seeing it as being rude on their part?

Is today Backwards Day?

Hmmm, on reconsideration I have to admit that rain and night are not the perfect mix, and yes....I am a bit stupid, but hey!! I'm an Aussie... we're upside down remember.

The water bottle reaction only causes more aggression from the drivers... believe me I've done that

I use to work afternoon shift, so night riding was a must. But how do you explain a clear night where the driver still has his lights on high and my powerful lights in his eyes don't make him realize to turn them down?
In fact, he claimed he had the right to use his high beam, even though he knew it was blinding me..... because it was a dark street..... yeah, we had a heated argument.

Get on of these its a Portable Strobe Light - Battery Powered
https://www.coolstuffcheap.com/thunparstrob.html

It will pop of a strobe light and people slow down because they don't know what it is you can just hang it down off the back of your seat so its seen from all directions.
