Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You know I was in the process of figuring this out for myself. At least that was until I found out my wife is pregnant. Carbon wheels officially ON HOLD. Happy and sad, all at the same time.

Reynolds Assaults are supposed to be a good wheel for about a grand less than the DVCs/ DVTs

I think you end up looking at more risk carried by you the cheaper you go. Ebay carbons are at the cheap end, however you do not know how long the hubs will last, how long they will stay in true and you have zero after market service. At the top end you have Zipps etc that have excellent after market service and well known performance profiles.

A middle ground would be a custom builder where you get the best of both worlds - after market service and warranty for OEMed cheaper carbon rims with your choice of hubs etc. More bang for your buck and more personalised service.

Thanks Zipp. Just found out roughly 3 hours ago. Yikes! Still in shock. This will be our third.

Most of the wheels in the $800-1000 range are going to be using Gigantex rims (Neuvation, Soul, Williams, Psimet, Plant X, etc). The rims are not the lightest but they're very strong and make for some very good wheels, you can't really go wrong with any of them.

I would get a quote from Psimet though, some nice handbuilt wheels with good hubs.

Williams or Psimet are about as cheap as I'd go personally.

I have low profile reynolds tubular rims on veloflex hubs, the wheelset comes in at 1,150 grams and they are amazing! I got a great deal from a guy on craigslist. the acceleration is simply incredible...it seems like at any speed I can stand on the bike and it goes faster. Note that reyonlds rims have internal nipples which means the tire has to be removed before you can true the wheel...I'm hoping never to true it! (this is so the spoke hole is smaller and the rim is stronger...so they say). the other thing to remember is that you need special brake pads which will wear faster. I would say find the lightest rims you can find!

OK, with a name of Zipp808 you're looking for cheap carbon wheels?

Does not compute.

aren't the soul carbon clinchers like $1100 or am i mistaken? you could get brand new reynolds assaults for that price off ebay. a month or two back new mavic carbone Sl's were listed every week and selling at like $700-$750. i saw one set go for $645 and i almost hung myself for not bidding.

somebody needs to get a group buy going on a set of 40+mm carbon clinchers.

You could stay mostly true to your name with some SRAM S80s. They usually show up on ebay for $1150 brand new.
