Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

average miles per day

what's a good number of miles to ride per day on average ?

i ride about 15 miles at a time and i do it about 4 - 5 times a week. so i average about 10 miles per day.

how many miles per day on average would you say one would have to ride before he started to overtrain ?

You're about 1/4 of the way before you start overtraining I ride about 40 a day, 4 times a week.

so you're saying you ride the miles that you do because you don't want to overtrain by going higher ?

Bikes: are better than yours.

You're asking the wrong question and the right question is too individual to get a good answer here.

You need to count hours, not miles. How many hours you need to do depends upon your fitness and what you do in those hours. Buy and read this: Friel

You are nowhere near overtraining ... not even close. Unless of course you're very active in other sports or are working a physically active job.

Read through this site: https://www.ultracycling.com/ ... you'll get a much better idea of what's possible.

If you go into the Long Distance forum, you'll see that there are two challenges: the 1000 km Month Challenge and the 1000 mile Month Challenge. Cyclists participating in the 1000 km Month Challenge are averaging 33.3 km (20.7 miles) a day for 30 days. Cyclists participating in the 1000 mile Month Challenge are averaging 53.6 km (33.3 miles) per day for 30 days. I'm not sure you'd want to do that year round, although I think there are a few doing that, but it can be comfortably done several months in a row.

But the answer does depend ... why are you riding?

Nah, I don't go farther because I'd get burnt out on cycling Plus, I gotta make time for running and swimming too. Also, I find that thats a good number for being motivated before each ride, feeling good after each ride, and getting the most benefit from each ride.

It depends on the week for me and how much time I have...I'll do anywhere from 25-45 miles 3-4 times a week. These rides usually never take more than 3 hours. The 30 mile rides only usually take about 1:45 and the 40mile ones ~2:30. I've yet to really time a hard effort on 40 miles though b/c the last one was the first of that length in a while and I did it in 2:34:56 but that included 16+ miles of hill intervals and sprints

I've never seen anyone add up mileage for the week and divide by 7. What does that number tell you? Nothing.

25 miles x Tues - Fri
80 miles on Sunday

That tells you something.

I'm going to start commuting 12-15 miles five days a week. On top of that I plan on doing a Tuesday (40 miles) and Thursday (35 miles) ride. On Fridays it's going to be about 2 hours of mountain biking. Saturdays I'm usually too lazy to ride, but I would like to start doing this 50 mile group ride. On Sundays I usually do about 45 miles.

Well, this is a more subtle attempt at trolling than your usual ones.

According to garmin my average ride length is 35 miles. that doesn't mean anything though since some days I ride 20 miles, others I ride 100 miles. some 20 mile days take less than an hour, others take 1.5 hours.

I ride at least 4 days a week.. . 2 with a group and 2 solo.. The two group rides average about 50 miles. My solo rides vary from about 25 miles to 50. Depending on my mood and mission .

I ride between 30-50 miles every day.

But, I'm retired, and can just make the time work.......

How about... say... your average mileage per YEAR for the last 5 years. Mine is a little over 10,000 miles per year.... :-p

That's at least more interesting than daily... lol

I typically only ride on the weekends while running every morning before going to work. I get in 40-50 mile rides on Sat & Sun which typically take me anywhere from 2.5 to 3 hours depending on final mileage.

I find hours to be a better metric.

Try 1-3 hours per day. You'll start noticing your doing more miles in that same time every day.
