Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

hitting a car?

how many of you have nearly or have hit a car because it was your own fault or almost only your fault. today while riding there was a car that seemed to just be stopped, so i went to pass it on the right (because i was already on the shoulder) and the car then goes to turn without using a turn signal. luckily i heard the passenger scream and i used my [dead] cat like reflexes and swerved out of the way, i then went and apologized to the three ladies and was on my way.

if the car didn't signal, then they were in the wrong.

I have, and today I don't know who's fault it was but both and and a taxi decided to move into the right lane when it started. He was in front, I went first not realizing he was going to, then he pulls in really fast and nearly hits me on the side.

I rear ended a car. We were both stopped and as we started to move he jumped forward came to sudden stop. well, I was too close behind and my brake lever/hood hit the car as I tried to dodge. Luckily no damage was done.

Been there, done that! I have a 10 mile loop that I ride on my lunch hour. In order to avoid having to cross a busy road twice in two blocks I ride the section on the sidewalk (let it be said, this is the ONLY place I ride on a sidewalk). During one of my rides, I saw the car pulling forward out of a parking lot so I slowed some. He looked right at me, looked left and then pulled out. I ended up on his hood with no physical damage to me but had a really trashed front wheel.

yeah i no it could have been much much much worse, luckily one of the ladies screamed which really made me relies that the car was turning and i should have just passed on the left but it was like a high speed single lane road that endeds up being if a cyclist tries to go more then half a foot from the shoulder (without going about 30 mph) people get very annoyed, so i made the stupid assumption that i could get away with passing on the right. probably the worst part though was the next mile and a half i was still a little shocked up so my legs really didn't want to respond to pedaling haha

i think ill share the ride with you all, incase any one who reads this lives in ohio. it was really nice nice long straight wide open road, os cars could see you for miles before they reached you. But i got stuck in a really bad but quick downpour (but caused standing water) that led me to ride the brakes all the way home and nearly crash once (not talking about the car incident that was before it started raining)

ive done that. my fault, wasn't paying attention and rear ended a car that stopped on a major road to turn right when someone was in the crosswalk. i wound up on his trunk. the only injury was my pride. i'm lucky he didnt look closely at the paint on his trunk.

That almost happened to me once. Both of us were starting to move when the light turned green, the driver saw me in the mirror and jacked the brakes. Twice.

I rear-ended a car when he stopped for no reason in the middle of the street. Now I don't follow quite so close...
