Glucose tablets
Years ago when I was a whipper snapper in school, we used to have big cross country runs and before each run we would pass around the glucose tablets like it was some kind of banned substance.
Is there any reason why it shouldn't be a good way of fuelling? It would be pretty easy to just pop one in your mouth every half hour and just let it melt. I never see or hear of people using them for cycling.

It's high GI.
Not fueling. Just a quick pep. And don't think you'll get 30 minutes out of it either. It'll basically go straight into your system and get used by your muscles insanely fast.
Random observation:
You gents over the pond think/talk about/use a lot more supplements then we do here in Oz (typically). So many threads on here about similar stuff.

Is the aussie diet more nutritious? I'm not saying it is, just thinking aloud.

ahh..if it is just a quick acting thing, then it could be used as a last resort when you have got the nutrition wrong and need a pick-up until the last food eaten hits the system.

that just masks fatigue. If you've bonked, there's still zero energy injected into the system to increase blood sugar level.

You lot over the pond worry too much.
Go live in Belgium.
Short of that, it's pretty simple. Much easier then you think. Don't worry so much! Relax, enjoy the ride. Like the other guy said, Bananna's are the best bet. Forget sports bars. Get normal muesli bars. Keep some on you.
Water?
Take 1/3 more then you think you'll need.
Take small amount $$$
If it's really hot, or your riding for more then around 2.5-3hrs, 1 bidon of sports drink. Preferably with magnesium.
And FYI when the pro's need some quick fuel, a can of coke goes a long way.

i dont know about glucose tablets, but i've been known to keep a handfull of jelly beans in my jersey pocket and eat them while riding, especially around Easter time, when everyone in the name of the Easter Bunny has them left over.
i wouldnt call them an efficient fuel, but they are a tasty, easy to eat snack.

Oh no you're not. You're marginally less fat than we poms, and positively underweight compared to our American cousins. Nationmaster.com, like sheldon, has the answers.
Edit: the data is 8 years old, so maybe you've been getting fatter faster than the rest of us in recent years?

Do you know where Limmyville is?
Coasting - I carry Werther's on tours (not kidding). That and Kendall Mint Cake (kidding).
I also suppliment with real food.
What I love about gels is the convenience.

Tom Stormcrow has said that he uses glucose pills when he is running low on energy late in a ride, but he has different issues involved.
