Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pedal and Brake Question

I'm just getting back into cycling. I purchased a hybrid in December just to get into shape and got bit by the bug so I went out and bought a road bike a couple of weeks agoand I'm loving it. I've already put over 150 miles in the new bike and I'm planning on a 50 mile ride this weekend. I had never tried clipless pedals so I tried a set of Crank Brothers Smartys on the hybrid. My road bike came with a set of WellGo SPD pedals but I initially put the Crank Bros on since I already had my shoes set up for them. Is there any advantage other that saving a few grams to go with the SPD's? Either one will work with my current shoes. Would I see in big difference in difficulty clipping, unclipping etc.?

The bike that I purchased has Tecktro Brakes. I have several comments in reviews etc. where people complained about the Tecktro Brakes. Is there a significant difference between the stopping power of them vs. 105 or Ultegra Brakes? The brakes on the road bike already feel considerably better that the brakes on my hybrid.

The Wellgos are junk and the only ones I've tried were a pain to clip out of. Stick with the Crank Brothers. They're incredibly easy to clip in and out of and while the Smartys are the lower end of the CB line, they're still a decent pedal.

I'd stick with the Crank Brothers Smarty pedals. They're actually probably lighter than the Wellgo pedals, which are generally crap.

Also you will probably see better braking power if you upgrade your brakes, but an easier thing to do would be to just upgrade your pads to Kool Stops or something nicer.
