Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

As far as the "it's the 41" excuse...

Self-awareness that you're an ass doesn't excuse your behavior. It just confirms that you are an ass because you don't care to change.

That said, I've gotten a lot of helpful info here, and in the 50+ and Clydes forums. You just sometimes have to have a thick skin and BS repellant...but then again that comes in handy elsewhere on the 'net AND in the real world.

well said. prompted by kidd of the 33, i wrote a longish post about climbing advice i had received on yesterday's ride. you have to wade through thousands of posts to find it though.

Can't have all serious answers. Besides, all you have is amatuers asking other amatuers questions. So basically, there's not a professional opinion amongst the whole group. Therefore, we try to cover our ignorance by showing how clever and funny we are. Hell, there are a couple of experts here who have posted 20 - 40 thousand times. I kid you not!! Now how smart do you think they are? Exactly. Talk about funny, 20-40 thousand posts??

I have been trying to work out why most cyclists are such a-holes for 40 plus years. I find only two good reasons. First, they chose cycling, cycling did not choose them. They don't play baseball, softball or other team sports for a reason. Cycling is a solitary sport that appeals to loaners & others with society disorders. Second, cyclists stay hopped up on caffeine & other stimulants making their otherwise tolerable personality flaws painfully intolerable.

Sometimes....ITT comes to mind. I would say cycling is very much a team sport...I mean that in the sense of racing by the way.

Shouldn't you be on the baseball diamond or something?

This is an aggressive forum. You probably won't like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate a message board of this quality and depth. We would suggest that you stick to safer and more familiar territory -- maybe someplace with mods that hold your hand while they try to convince you that the internet is a friendly place without snark and sarcasm where you can frolic without facepalms. Perhaps you think that would make the forums better. Perhaps you're mouthing the words as you read this.

You exhibit none of the traits you describe, of course.

You must not have met many cyclists over the years. Most of the cyclists I've met have been pretty friendly.

Some of the biggest asses I've met were on baseball or softball teams I was a member of.

You don't have to be a professional at biking to have valuable opinions/information sharing ability, its silly to think you do.

I can think of another reason as to why cyclists (and people in general) might not like you...

Hint: You're a tool.

I have a rule that I don't post anything in a forum/discussion list that I wouldn't say to someone's face. Of course, how I would say it in person (tone, facial expression/body language) puts meaning/intent to my message that isn't always obvious in print. I suppose those pesky "emoticons" are good for something after all!

My advice: grow a thick skin and take anything anyone says here with a grain of salt (if not tongue-in-cheek).

The only requirement for posting on BF is access to the internet. As such I would take everything with a very large grain of salt.

Incorrect. My personality flaws don't need chemical assistance to be painfully intolerable.
