and also if someone sweats a lot. also incorrect.
before i bought wicking base layers i used layers of t shirts and especially when it is raining and i wear a waterproof jacket, the inside soaks up so much sweat and holds onto it, i can wring it out. when I stop, i freeze. i shivered so uncontrollably i would rather keep riding.

you screwed up. Injuries happen in group sports, and even in individual x-sports. That is what figuring "What did I do wrong?" is about. You'll recover and be fine. You might lose some speed, or maybe you can recover fully. Lance crashed in this TdF. In past years, maybe his reflexes were faster, maybe he spotted trouble a tad earlier and veered around.
Botto's comment about always wearing a base layer, what does that have to do with an ankle injury?
You play intensive sports, you get hurt. It's unavoidable. My best high school friend was hit by a car or some vehicle in Monterey Co. , two weeks in ICU at Stanford. Sh*t happens.

there's no farking way you sweat more than one of my best friends, who also hails from blighty (north).
i'd wager he's been riding longer than you. he also always wears a base layer.

can someone explain why the guy who was hit was going that slowly? did he just stop pedalling and sit up? that doesn't seem very sensible even if he isn't going to sprint.

He was up the road and lead out the sprint, he then proceeded to pull off right and sit up which is common in a sprint, it wasn't his fault, it wasn't umd's fault either.

I was wondering the same thing. The rider in green and umd come up on him so fast it was like he had completely stopped.

yea. he looked like he was completely staionary but maybe that was just exaggerated by the speed everyone else was going at and the camera's viewpoint.

The problem was people were sprinting for like 30th place from what I could see and they were crossing the center line and going right around the rider who was falling back from the sprint. The rider in the green who went left more or less cut Steve off and also waited till the last freaking possible second to get out of the slowing sprinters way leaving Steve NO time to react.

so that's like a hospital pass in rugby.

I heard that term while watching a rugby match the other day. What is it exactly? We have that term in Ultimate and it's a long floaty pass that hangs in the air forever letting a bunch of people get under it and leads to injuries.

This was my first time doing that group ride, I don't live up there so I don't know any of the locals on that ride or their reputations, but umd definitely wasn't pointing fingers at the slowing rider.

that's like throwing the ball to someone where the receiver is bound to be hit hard. setting him up to get whacked.

Glad everyone was wearing a helmet.
Boy, the comments on youtube are unbelieveable. Or maybe not, considering this:

Gee, I sure I hope your spirit isn't crushed, Steve...

ES: As a coach, I am a total hard-ass... I can’t coach a lot of guys because I would crush their spirit... the biggest problem that I see in the US scene is that there are too many guys that never played high school sports... They never got drilled hard as young athletes... They can’t take any criticism... cycling gets a lot of rejects from high school sports and so we don’t have tough ass guys who can take it when you tell them they suck.

My spirit isn't crushed. I accept that I contributed to it, but to go all the way and lay all the fault on me and say that I caused it is just stupid. As for the guy in green being in the "center of the road", he was to the far left of the road, it was everyone else (including me) who went into the oncoming lane and shouldn't have. That, plus the sprint being too slow so that people around me started sprinting from the middle of the pack because they thought they had the chance were the biggest problems. But as RX said in the twitter thread, I put myself in that position for no purpose since I wasn't even contesting the sprint. I should have just hung out further back.

My ankle is shredded and I have a tiny scrape on each elbow, but other than that, the only real abrasion is on my hip, right where the base layer ended. Yes, some kind base layer there would have been nice... maybe they just need to make double-layer shorts. It's not thickness that matters, but just having two layers to slide against each other instead of your skin.
It's been my experience that my arms rarely get much or any abrasions, which is why the "why don't you shave your arms too" people are so stupid whenever shaving comes up.

Poor lead out guy
all you can do it keep pedaling and stay straight and hope that doesn't happen. The same situation (being close in following a guy at speed and he swerves last second) happens to me all the time but it just leads to me taking a pothole at speed not a guy on a bike. Also for the informal poll that seems to be occurring I am on the base layers are more hot in humidity. I would think the pro base layer users would be sporting the full length vs armless otherwise.

I'm not sure what you're saying, UMD. You admitted you screwed up. The injured guy 200 mi north of you was way faster than you. You didn't grow up in Coastal Cali. When you were 10, what kind of bike were you riding, and where? Just tell us the facts.

But in all seriousness, that was insane! I even tried to dodge out of the way here on the couch.
