Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I've been registered and lurking on here for quite a while. I have been strictly off-road for a few years, but just got a 2013 CAAD 10 a couple of weeks ago to expand my cycling possibilities. If you are going to join a cult, I can't think of a better one.
Went on a run this morning and remembered to bring the camera. Still bone stock plus bottle cages and gps. Here's a couple of shots (I know, I know, slam that stem!)

Very striking images, AScoda, and welcome to the Cult!

Ratty, that's such a beautiful bike. A CX bike would serve me 1000x better right now, but I can't help but lust after picking up a 2014 CAAD10 3 when the 2015s come out... I know I plan ahead, but it would be almost everything I wanted in my CAAD10.

Had a bittersweet ride today on my new Caad10 Black Inc. Started the day trying to get my wife motivated to go for a ride and we finally got out there but she kept falling behind. She decided to head back home and I continued on another 16 miles (30 total) and turned around. The bike performed flawlessly as expected and I just cant believe how well it rode. About half way back I get a call that my 9 year old son had and accident on his mtb riding with his Grandfather and younger brother, not knowing anything other than he hurt his leg but otherwise okay and heading to the hospital I turned up the heat for the rest of the ride home. Again, bike did awesome but not priority at this point and after having X ray's and talking with the Dr. he broke his femur just below the hip on his left leg. He's resting now and scheduled for surgery tomorrow morning where they have to put in some rods and then take them back out 5-6 months down the road. I feel so bad for him and almost guilty for pushing to ride today?

My thoughts, & prayers go out to you & your family. Hope he has a speedy recovery, he'll be as good as new or better in no time.
Its better to suffer these types of injuries while you're young, the recovery time is much short for children.

You shouldn't blame yourself, it was an accident. We all had them as kids, & as we age we try to avoid them.
Don't let this mishap tarnish your new purchase. When he's better you guys can take a nice family ride together.

Congrats, & condolences.

DVD - sorry to hear about this - with 3 young kids, my wife and i get upset with anything, so i can't imagine what you guys are going through. Thoughts are with you and the family. This can only make him stronger. Before you know it, he'll be saying "Dad, why do i always have to slow down for you when we ride together?!?)

Taking my bike out for a first ride. looking forward to it, but am worried about all the sand and wind in Dubai at the moment. rained yesterday as well. I have been told that my rims will go to a silver brake track a lot quicker when it rains

Bikes: 2014 CAAD10 3 (Ninja Stealth)

went for a 32 km first ride on my new 2014 CAAD10 3 Ultegra Balck Stealth bike this evening. Very windy and sandy. but i am glad that i did. all of us on here know how good the frame is. The Ultegra is definitely feeling smoother than the 105 group set on the 2013 CAAD10 that i sold. Shifts were excellent. I'm not a seasoned rider, but even i could tell a difference. I actually sold the stock wheels and mine are listed in an earlier post. i really didn't know what sort of difference they would make, but they definitely complement the frame. The hubs, the rims, all of it. Excellent excellent excellent. I am glad that i got this instead of the canyon or specialised.

I did get the 53/39T big chainring option. During a windy part of the ride and it was my first ride in 2 months, i was struggling. I actually shouted to my friend..

"I'm not man enough to ride such a big cog"

through the wind, he heard the last word as something different and asked if i was married after the ride.

Jokes aside... awesome ride!!

Have any pics? I want one but will need to unload my 2013 caad10-5 first.
Here it is weighing 15.3lbs with 2013 Reynolds Assaults:
https://www.pinkbike.com/photo/10273627/

I'm thinking I'll sell it with the stock FSA cranks, then wheels + saddle + cockpit from the 2014 to bring the price down to around 1000$.
I have sram force with red cranks on there and don't like the way it shifts compared to dura ace 7900 on my other bike.
Guess I'll have to source an 11spd freehub for my Reynolds assaults as well as sell the sram red crank separately.

I think the 2014 10-3 will look deadly with my Assaults.

Thoughts?

EDIT: Just saw your pics. Sorry.
Thinking about it... this thing will cost me close to $1000 for a paintjob and a lateral move from Force to Ultegra. Hmmm...

i had the same raw/black 2013 caad 5 105 that you had, but i had not done any mods apart from a mmc chain. so my decision was straight forward. i wanted to go to ultegra, and get a fizik seat, and get some wheels. so instead of upgrading the parts, i would have spent the same as selling my bike and getting a new one. i was looking at the 2013 caad10 3 ultra in white/black, but when i saw the 2014 caad10 3 - it was a no brainer.

i am not knowledgable enough about sram or the other components so i can't really offer any opinion.

the new 2014 would look excellent with your wheels.

Went to the Trek Bike Superstore in San Diego this weekend. They were having a sale and the CAAD 10 Black Inc was only 1500 (I thought that was a great deal and was surprised to see it this low) I don't know much about these bikes other than they look pretty sexy, and comes equipped with a top notch build. Enjoying all the pics of your bikes. Enjoy them everyone!

OK, I have a question that's a bit off the CAAD topic, and maybe I should even start a new thread on this, but I need some people with Cannondale experience to respond. I've had a CAAD9 for 4 years now. I'm looking at getting an EVO Hi Mod Red Racing edition, but on the C'dale web site it is only pictured in colors I don't like. My question is, if I don't care for the blue/red/white paint scheme of the hi mod red racing, can I get it in one of the other EVO colors?? I don't see why not, as the frame seems to be identical across the EVO line, but the difference is in components.

I'm not an expert, but as i understand it, you can only choose the colour/component combinations that are shown. The reason for this is that even though all evo frames have the same geometry (i think), they are made out of 3 different grades of Carbon which contribute to lower weight and different stiffness & vibration dampening. All CAAD10 frames are the same. But there is a standard Carbon Evo Frame, a Hi-Mod Carbon Evo Frame, and the Black inc Nano-Carbon evo frame. So when you choose your particular model, you are getting the higher grade Carbon (which is only made in specific colours) and that specific group set. That all factors in the price.

maybe someone else with more knowledge can weigh in with more details (or better wording at least) if i am wrong. But this is my understanding based on many reviews.

But this is a CAAD thread

Well, its kind of a spoke protector, in the fact that its there so you don't over shift your chain off the cog and into your spokes. If your rear derailleur is setup properly, this shouldn't happen. However, its fairly easy for the rear derailleur to get bumped and if you're not paying attention, you'll shift into your spokes. The result of this can be damage to your frame, but usually always results with wrapping your derailleur around your cassette and breaking your hanger. Also, hope you don't do too much damage to your wheel.

I had something similar happen, on a steep climb doing hill repeats, I put the hammer down and my chain jumped off one of the derailleur jockey wheels, got caught, wrapped around my cassette and stopped me dead in my tracks. I somehow managed to stay upright. Took the bike to the shop and they repaired everything...I thought. When I got the bike back, I went climbing again, only this time I couldn't shift to the extremes (cross chain). Yes I know I shouldn't be doing that but the bike should still be able to shift into those gears. So, I messed with it, thought I had it it fixed, went out in front of the house going up and down the street shifting my way through the gears and again when I got to the point of cross chaining, the chain came off the jockey wheels, wrapped the derailleur around the cassette, nailed my seat stay, cracked the frame and broke a spoke. I ended up with a frame replacement and my wheel was fine...still, it took over a month with to get this worked out with the shop. Which is why I now have an EVO - I got bored waiting for the shop and went out and blew my bonus on a new bike.

What size and what year? I'd pay $100 for shipping on that to get it here. Hell, I might even do $200. That's a steal for a Black Inc.

That is less than I paid for my CAAD10 3 - Ultegra.

A 1500 dollar black Inc?
I'd buy it out of principle.

Yep, dedicated path now from Cypress point park to about halfway across the Pinellas side, where it stops at a low bridge. Couple of roads and business entrances to cross, and some joggers, dog walkers, and leisure riders to watch out for; but otherwise, enjoy the view, and rip it!

The Caad Black is 2499.99 at the Trek Bicycle Superstore.

On another note. Finally got my Caad some upgrades. SRAM Red and 3T goodies.

I do have a nice CAAD10 in my future but I love my CAAD7 and recently came across a Rival group for a great price, it is a new take off group.

I will say this, my CAAD7 is a 2005 and has a mix of 5500/6500 and still performs with no flaws. It has some scratches from age and use but I have no issues shifting or anything, it's still a good group. So this change is really just a want. I also really do want a black group vice the silver comps that are on there now, I know once I get it stripped down I can still get the 9 speed parts sold on ebay.

Tell me what you guy's think. and also, the one question I have with the group is that it comes with everything except the BB. I know they are easy to come by but I don't know enough to know if there is something I should look for when buying one? I know I need a GXP, will I need anything to make it fit my frame?

If you're going to strip it down, why not just convert to 10-speed? The Rival group must be 10-speed if it's a new take-off. Finding 9-speed parts in black will be difficult unless you're going Campy. As for the bottom bracket, is it still Octalink or did it go BB30 that year? If it's Octalink, it should be a straight swap to GXP. If BB30, you'll need a BB30 to GXP adapter. Check FSA or Wheels Manufacturing for that.

I doing the same with my CAAD5. Good luck.

Thanks for the response, I didn't think anyone was going to chime in so I went to the mechanics thread. It is Octalink so I am good to go as far as swapping to the GXP. The Rival group I found is a new take off 10 speed group. The guy didn't even ride it, he stripped it down before even leaving the shop and upgraded his bike to Red. He is selling the full Rival group for a great price.

Over in the Mechanics thread those guy's basically told me I was making a mistake if I did this. One poster said that it's a known issue that 10 speed SRAM front shifting is crappy unless you have YAW. My shifting now is great, and I don't want iffy shifting. I am not loyal to either brand, I just want a black group, and I want under the bar tape cable routing, I hate the look of the wires coming out the side of the shifters.
