Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hey guys,
New here, I've read through a huge amount of this thread.
It help me narrow down my first bike purchase to a CAAD8 or CAAD10 vs Domane 4.3

I need help with sizing. On competitive cyclists I am a:

I'm considering a 58 but a few posts I've read said sometimes people can come down a size. The LBS suggest 58 + 60 I didn't like the 60 and their response was the seat needs to be lower and you'd be fine.... Can anyone look at the measurements and provide some insight please? Is 56 at all possible? There are Craigslist deals I might consider but it's a 56 and almost 2 hours away from me. LBS has no CAAD in a 56 for me to try. =(

I just fixed an annoying creak on my Caad10 also by greasing the pedal threads, they were on very tight but still creaked.
They actually creaked on the stock FSA crank and a new Quarq.

Changed the BB30 bearings thinking that was the prob only to still have the creak, so greased the pedals and its gone now finally.

Another common creak is the seat, grease the rails lightly and tighten well. Also the seatpost.
The bottom cone of the headseat can cause creaking and may need greasing too.

Creak Checklist before resorting to bb bearings:

- Clean & grease pedal threads, swap pedals if necessary
- Grease & tighten seat rails
- Grease seatpost lightly
- Grease bottom headset cone on fork
- Cable endstops on frame
- Stem/headset spaces

Your suggested top tube is 57-58 depending on the type of fit according to what you posted. To me that would say the only size that would truly fit you is 58 which has a 57.5 top tube. You have also had a shop take their time to fit you and confirm the same thing. Maybe you can fit a 56 but you would probably need a ridiculously long stem which would mess up the handling. It's seriously not worth it to get a bike that doesn't fit just to save a few bucks. Your life will be miserable and that bike will be back on Craigslist in a month or two

Go to the lbs and tell the the situation. Any good lbs will give you a quick fit and tell you if it's too big for you and they should also let you test ride it for you to feel if it is too big for you.

But if you drop it you bought it

But I am 6'2 and have an inseam around 34/35. I ride a 56 caad10 just fine (current bike). I had a 58 synapse and road that just fine. If it's your first bike go with the lbs, especially if they offer free tune ups. but regardless, the lbs will give you a fit with a purchase. (you don;t have to get a cannondale, check out other brands)

I'm most worried about that too. With no 8's or 10's in a 56 for me to try. It's difficult. I did already test ride a caad 8, synapse carbon, and Domane 2.0 all 58 and they feel right. I liked the "stiff" more connective to the road feel of the Caad8. Now after finding a caad10 105 in 56 on CL and reading a few post about people "typically go down a size" at other forums I came here to the cult for support.

See... I think i need to ride a 56 for sure. Also. Is it "just cannondale" that allows for dropping a size down? Should I test a 56 Domane? And are those 2 fairly good comparisons for and entry level "quick" /response bike?

It is hit or miss between manufactures. I suggest go to the lbs and have them fit you for a bike and I am sure they will allow you to test different kinds. For your first bike, go with one that fits, as in:

I should ride a 58 but I have made my 56 work with no complaints.

I am glad I started on a 58 though, so I suggest getting a bike that actually fits rather than a bike that you can make fit.

What about Super Six? That has the same geometry as CAAD10. If they have a Super Six in 56 you can test ride that and see if it fits.

Most people believe that fitting the top tube is the most important thing. The fit calculator is not an exact science but if your measurements are right and it's suggesting 57.3-58.9 top tube then 56 might be too small. But...I'm 5'11 and my CAAD9 is a 54 and fits perfectly but when I do fit calculator it tells me my ideal top tube is around 54-55cm which is exactly what the 54 has.

You won't know till you find one to test ride.

Super six, hmm good point. I'm going to test ride a few 56's to eliminate some more. Thanks guys. Don't want to clog the thread. A test ride and I'll report back.

Mean time: (don't flame me for asking) but if the CAAD didn't exist what would you consider a good entry level "responsive" bike? I'm I on track with a Domane 2.3 or 4.3?

Well, despite the fact that I wasn't gonna do it, I took the plunge and rebuilt my Team Colours frame with Ultegra6800 last night. I got a cracking deal from BikeBug in Sydney, so decided it was time. I took it for the maiden voyage this morning and was very impressed - buttery-smooth shifting and very strong braking performance. Definitely a worthy upgrade over DA7800 - mine was still working fine, but is getting old...

cheers

I'm 6'-0" and ride a 58cm Caad8, but then I have longer legs and a shorter torso than a friend of mine who is the same height, with shorter legs and longer torso - he rides a 54cm. 56cm seems like right in the middle and should work just fine with bike fit adjustments as required.

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before.. but would anyone be interested in bulk ordering custom Cult of CAAD jerseys? I know they are doing it for the Road Forums. I'm just not sure if it's been done here before...?

I would be down for car stickers (which i've been meaning to ask)but jerseys would cost a lot since there are only so many of us, plus the person doing the ordering will have to put down their own money.

But I think we would have to get cannondale's permission for anything that says "caad".....

A sticker that has "CULT OF THE" in white and "CAAD" in green, I'd totally rock it

You can buy a jersey from china for $20. If you can get even 25-50 you can probably buy bulk from someone on DH Gate to print them. Even if it came out to $20 each I'm sure plenty of people would be willing to pay that much

Well if they are 40-50 I am sure there will be interest, but if it's 80-100 I will not be buying one and I am sure some will feel the same way as well

My cut-off is 60$ for a jersey, and even then I better like it, A LOT. But that's just my guidelines for purchasing them.

I can't help but feel that Bikebug and Ribble are the two best online retailers to purchase smoking deals on Shimano. I've gotten some smoking deals on Ribble for Assos, and they do have great prices on Campy every now and then. I just don't want to get into trouble for buying whole groupsets from over seas.

I might be purchasing a CX frameset, which means I'll need a new groupset. I'm thinking of upgrading my road groupset and putting my 6700 on the CX bike. Just not sure I want to run 6700 through the muck since I plan on beating it up. 6800 sounds great though. And it is not that terrible of a price.... Any experience with 6700? I was curious if you could compare 6700 to 6800.

spent $280.. worth it?

1993 Cannondale R600 2.8
16 speed Shimano 600 index shifters
Shimano gearset
Vetta leather saddle
Mavic Open 4CD wheelset
Bontrager R1 tires

not planning on changing much to it.
have the whole bike taken apart, cleaned and polished.
lower the stem just a bit
take the kickstand off
take the plastic ring next to the cassette off
take off the water bottle cages
get some nice toe clips

and no, i'm not a clipless fan...not yet, give me a year on this and that might change though.

i was thinking about getting velcro straps or toe clips... any recommendations?
