I'm certain the welds are structurally quite sound, and of high quality.

But they aren't as pretty as the CAAD9 welds. Having had my 9 next to a 10, the CAAD9 is, well, prettier.

Here's a question about a weird (but good) discovery I've made recently. This situation has occurred many times, withthe same result:

- I'm going up a hill with a group.
- We crest at the exact same speed, then free wheel for a bit.
- I run away from the others.
- Some of the other riders are bigger / heavier than me, others are smaller / lighter. Makes no difference.
- There's no slipstreaming.

I rode RAGBRAI last week, and over those 500 miles I had dozens of opportunities to deliberately test this situation. I tested it by slowing down a bit to let the others run away from me, yet my bike still accelerated and caught up. I tried to skew the results every which-way - but got the same result every time: My (almost) factory-stock CAAD9 simply freewheels faster than anything else I've come across. The only changes I've made is the tires (Conti GP 4000 S 23s).

This is obviously not a complaint, though I'd be curious to know what could be contributing to this welcome advantage.

Any thoughts?

Not sure the cause, but I've noticed the same thing on my '10 CAAD9. I use Michelin Kylons on my RS20 wheels and Schwalbe ZX's on my Soul 30mm wheels.....in each case, the bike seems to out-descend the other bikes.

Noticed the same thing on Copper Triangle with my CAAD9. I'm 10 pounds lighter than my buddy and his bike is heavier and he was pedaling away while I was sitting up coasting.

Hey all,

I've got a Team blue '99 CAAD3 frame that i'm going to be buying parts for. I've looked through the catalog for '99, but can't find a model that matches the frame I have. The model stickers have been removed, but i'd like to find out what it is. I looked at the serial number on the bottom to find the year (1999), but I've hear that you can't determine much else with cannondale serial numbers. Can anyone help me out.

Also I plan to buy a head set and forks soon so I was wondering if anyone has recommendations?

@zitter, well done! question for you on the seat clamp. i have seen the bolt forward before, but is the clamp designed that way OR can the claim just be utlized with it forward or facing backwards? i assume with its current install everyone can better see the logo on it. :) later.

hmai18 08-14-11 09:12 AM

Bolt forward is supposed to place less stress on the post since it's not pinching in the same place as the slot in the seat tube.

Velo_Tut 08-14-11 09:48 AM

^^^ agreed. I turned mine around initially when I bought my CAAD9 because I thought it was backwards, but when I took it back to the LBS for a tune up later in the year, they turned it around again. Little did I know.

After looking at the catalogs I'm guessing that the frame I have is the same for all the R class bikes, rather it's the components that were put on that determine the specific model (R500, R1000, etc.) Does this sound right?

Also I'm thinking the frame might be too large for me. I was told it was 56cm, but I measured and it may be more like a 58cm+ So this may get sold.

Yeaaaah! Picking up my new Caad 10-5 at my lbs tomorrow:) Canīt wait to ride it! Had some trouble deciding whether to go for the black or the red, but ended up with the red one. Red -always- goes faster;)

Itīs going to be quite a different experience from my old Kona Zing with Sora and iron wheels;)

So happy right now!

Greetings from Norway:D

Joining the Cult now.

I tested a CAAD9-6 and a Felt Z85 at LBS and I loved the CAAD9 back in March.
Bought the 2010 52 CAAD9 w/ Tiagra/Sora parts for $1150. Price was a little high, but it was the last CAAD9 in inventory of the LBS.
Since then, upgraded crank, FD, RD, shifters, BB, chain, cassette, and calipers to Ultegra SL (6600s) for ~$600.
I rode about ~500 miles on it, very nice ride, even better with the Ultegra parts.

My next upgrade will probably be a new wheelset, tires, clipless pedals, and maybe a new saddle.

UPDATE:/ Just got Ultegra (pd-r670) clipless pedals.

I just lucked into the cult of CAAD.. won a $10 raffle for a CAAD10 frameset at a local crit. Zitter, just out of curiousity, what did you pay for the frameset? I'm really liking your build.

Also, I'm currently riding a 2010 Madone 6.5 'performance' or H2 frame size 58. While it's great for longer events I'd like something a little more aggressive in build. I intend for the CAAD to become my crit bike, specifically, I'd like to get lower in the drops.

Here's me on the Madone when I'm thinking about being aero:

And when I'm not:

Does anybody have any experience with both bikes, could I go as small as a 54? Should I?

zitter 08-17-11 09:22 PM

I bought the frameset for $400
