Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Rides/Exercise Oct 1/2/3

First weekend of October ... and DST starts on Sunday. The clocks move forward 1 hour so that there is an extra hour of daylight in the evenings. Wonderful!! Instead of darkness by about 6:45 pm, it won't get dark until about 7:45 pm. Just in time to enjoy the increasingly warmer weather.

Friday - 25 km ride after work. Although the temperature got up to about 14C during the day, as the sun goes down, the temperature drops quickly ... so the ride ended up being quite chilly.

I wasn't feeling very well today, so the ride was a bit of a struggle. Here's hoping tomorrow's ride will be better!

How's autumn going for you northern hemisphere people ... got any fall colours photos?

Wherever you are, what kind of riding are you doing this weekend?

First day of October and the air and temperature in South Florida is absolutely gorgeous. No humidity and a cool 72 degrees on the way to work. Saturday will be a nice 30-mile "stroll" down A1A from Deerfield Beach to Fort Lauderdale and back. It should be a breeze literally. Hoping and praying that the change in temp is here to stay ~ Mike

Saturday - Just got in from a 60.35 km ride on the tandem on a gorgeous +17C (63F) day ... one of the warmest days in this area in months. In fact, at the nearby lake we cycled to, it apparently got to 21C (70F). The sun is shining, the wind is light ... it's beautiful!!

And the lake has a lot of water in it because of the recent rains. It got down to something like 17% full, but is up to 57% now ... all in the last 5 months or so of winter rains.

This isn't foo.
DST is November 07. (first sunday) and the clocks turn back. Giving an hour more daylight at the end of the day.
Am I missing something here?

Apparently you are missing something! https://www.timeanddate.com/worldcloc...nge.html?n=152

Not too pleased about losing an hour's sleep this weekend, but I am pleased about the increased evening daylight. We've got a fairly long ride planned tomorrow, and are also toying with the idea of going canoeing after with the extra hour of daylight and with the beautiful spring weather these days.

October 1- I got to thinking "If I only rode 33.3 miles each day, I could get a 1,000 miles in the month for the first time ever!" Then I got home, we went out to eat at Razzoo's, and I didn't ride at all. So much for that plan.

Saturday morning, I did get out and ride 35 miles with the bike shop group, though.

I also passed 6,000 miles for the year, which was my goal for the year.

I've often had that thought ... or even if I only rode 33.3 km each day, I could get a 1000 km month (see challenges in the LD forum), but it has never worked out that way. I seem to have to ride long on the weekends to make up for the days I missed during the week.

And congratulations!

Had a crit today, and have to volunteer for the tour tomorrow, so no real distance this weekend. Planning on doing 68 miles or so on Monday though.

Sunday - 101.2 km!! The second 100K in a week ... rode one last Sunday too!!

Today was a gorgeous day that got to about 20C ... warmest day in 23 weeks, apparently! It feels great to feel warm when I am outside and when I ride, instead of freezing. At one point I actually overheated and had to shed a layer ... down to one layer.

One way to tell that spring is here and the temps are warming up is ... the snakes are awake! There were two dead ones on the road today.

I wore my heart rate monitor and discovered that on the way out I was mostly in Zone 4 and on the way back I was mostly in Zone 3 with a few forays back into Zone 4. The only time I was in Zone 2 was when I was going downhill, and even then it wasn't every downhill. I work on these rides!!

DST is regulated by governments and may vary from place to place, so don't assume it's universal around the globe.
Here in the US, we are going to LOSE an hour of daylight at the end of the day, not gain it. We go back to "regular" time.
And I assume that those in the southern hemisphere are just now starting DST and will gain an hour in their spring days.
Not sure what the foo comment is about- being off-topic, maybe it belonged in foo.

50 miles at 18.0 yesterday. Nice small group of 4 bikes. Only problem is nothing seems to get me motivated after a great century ride at the MS150.

You assume correctly ... here in Victoria we have started DST, it is spring, and we have "gained" an hour of daylight in the evenings. WooHoo!!
And yes, the whole DST thing varies between countries and within countries. Just like not all Canadian provinces change their time, not all Australian states change their time either.

Here's a chart of the DST situation around the world:
https://www.timeanddate.com/time/dst2010.html

Continuing with the topic of the thread ... who else is out riding this weekend? Has it started to get too cold for decent rides up in Canada and the northern states?

It's been freezing here. Couple that with rain, and pretty decent winds = me not HTFU and sitting in my room drinking tea.

I rode down south today. Had a route planned out without checking the length, and just turned around when the time was right. That put me right near Kleburg Cemetery, so I went in and had a look around. Oldest stone I saw was from 1879, which is pretty old for around here. Saw one marker for a lady named Myrtle Branch. Got in 46.9 miles.

It was absolutely beautiful weather, cool but not cold, breezy, but not too bad to ride.

I went on a 30 mile loop starting and ending on the Walnut Creek/Alamo border - which also involved an hill climb up Mt. Diablo. My first time doing a hill climb in the real world and needless to say I liked it.

Friday: usual 19 mile lunch ride at a recovery pace.
Saturday: 18 mile ride doing a LT test. Ended the TT a few miles from home on accident and could barely pedal those miles home without tipping over.
Sunday: 80 mile ride to boulder and back. Rode up flagstaff to the end of the pavement.
After I was home I ran a bit. Now I am completely exhausted.

had a great ride on sat. Pescadero to Bonny Doon on Highway 1...yes this is the same climb Lance and the boys did in the Tour of California. We rode along the coast with a tailwind all morning. it was overcast pretty much the whole way with nice rollers. what makes this ride so nice is the lack of stop signs and stop lights! and pretty much a wide shoulder the whole way with few cars. just after Davenport, we turned left and the long climb to Bonny Doon. Someone went and spray painted some nice words of encouragement on the road. "hurt yet?", "how about now?" at the winery, we turned around and flew down...the curves were not too technical (no switchbacks), and the some of the road hit 10%, which means 45 mph for a max speed...wicked fast for the those curves! back on Highway 1 we had a headwind the whole way back.

4th week of climbing Sandia Crest and 8th in a row (twice a week). This will end Oct 23. Friday I climbed it from my house 120 miles RT. with additional climbs 8Kft. usually just 4,300 where I start. This is a good climbing year for me. I have climbed many gorgeous climbs in NM. I need to go back to 132-136 lbs so I can get to the summit faster. I am less than 150. This morning me and my son rode the MUP and he also did some small climbs. My daughter perfected her cart wheel dismount with a half pike, from a cantering draft horse.

Sunday 10/3/10......Good ride today! LOTS of riders today! Old forum friend Jason went flying by. At one point I stopped to take a picture as another rider rolling down shouted out "Beanz". Too fast for a good look but I don't think we've met, not sure.

Gina did very well today. I could tell by the way she was rolling up most of the ride compared to her grinding up GMR in past weeks. Our planned turnaround was the shack as usual but I could tell she was feeling much better today so after mentioning it, she decide to go a bit further. Good for her, and who am I to deny her of the joys of climbing? We hit the next planned turnaround but again, she was ready for more, let's go! Finally about 1/2 mile short of the turnout lined with the rock wall, she decided to turnaround. If I had known we were that close to the wall, we'd have gone to that point. I didn't realize we were that close, 2 miles after the rock wall turnout, the sufferfest ends and you're pretty much on easy street to the village. After the ride, Gina and I went to eat then decided to go back for a drive up and across GMR/GRR to the village. She realized how close she was to the village and said, " I could have made it!". Won't be long now.

I had told her to give GMR a chance. Give it a few weeks and it will get better. She was doubtful after 3 weeks so I told her that if it doesn't get better after 8 weeks, we'll discontinue. After this ride, she said it was much better. Good job Gina, you just bought yourself another 8 weeks on GMR bwahahahahaha!

Rider shouted "Beanz", I'm thinking forum member.

Happy Gina
