Pain behind knee

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pain behind knee

I never thought I am going to post this but I'm beginning to develop some slight pain behind the knee. I thought my bike was 100 % fitted for me but after 2 months of not a single pain riding it, I first noticed it 2 days ago that specially on a high cadence, there is a discomfort feeling behind my right knee.

I rested for a couple of days and lowered my saddle a bit, and tried riding again today. The discomfort is still there. I don't think it is inflamed or anything yet as I can still walk normally without any single pain.

Could pedals contribute to this pain too? Any other tips. I'm going to see my fitter probably this weekend too.

My understanding is that's usually the result of strain to the hamstring. Lots of potential causes - the saddle could be a bit high, the bars could be a bit low, the saddle could be aft a bit too far, or everything could be set fine but your hams and back might not be loose enough for a good road position without some long-term flexibility work.

Thanks daxr,

However it's not my hamstring that hurts. I'm not sure what the medical term for it, but it's the part just above the calf, and just before where the knee bends. I think you maybe right on flexibility. Maybe I should try more stretches just before going out to ride.

Your hamstring could be causing the pain behind your knee. Definitely try lowering your saddle and leaving it for a few weeks, then raise it little by little as you gain strength. Stretch. Stretch. Stretch. That's what has helped me with my exact same issue. I'm also going to get a BG Fit done, as well.
