Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First Century Completed !!!

Well...completed my first century yesterday.
Here are some stats.
It was emotionally draining. Start getting cramps around mile 40 and by mile 70 I had to walk the bike a few hundred yards to try and walk off the cramps (I was going up a hill and couldnt go further) Had back spasms shortly there after (had back surgery two weeks ago) so I was a wreck crossing the line. Had two major climbs (for us floridians they are major climbs) one was 10% grade up to 240' covering about a tenth of a mile. The other was 14% grade up to 333' dont know who far it was. Next time I need to do a better hydration/nutrition plan. It was cold so I was not consuming enough fluids. Ate some banannas and cliff energy blocks, powerbar energy chews, trail mix. Was afraid to eat some of the powerbars they provided for fear they would mess with my stomach, they also had pb&j roll ups that just looked ugly. Started ride at 34 degrees. Stayed with a group for the first 20 or so miles then had a flat, had to change it, then pretty much rode the rest by myself, except for catching up with people...and people behind me catching up...meeting at the rest stops.
Anyway...I accomplished another goal in life...rode in honor of my uncle and a coworker who lost their lives to cancer.

Awesome!

Don't really care about the stats. Centuries are like landing a plane: if you can walk away from it, it was a good one.

Good job. I'm still trying to figure out the worst part of the ride... the cold, the wind, or the hills. It was a good time regardless. Congrats on finishing your first century.

Congrats, I just did my first century this weekend as well. Good times. Those calorie numbers seem heavily inflated though, don't take them as 100% accurate. Now it's time to prepare for/do another!

The hills were tough...you did the metric right?

Yea, pretty confident you didn't burn 70cal/mi.

Congrats on your century. I worked the final SAG station on a century ride this last August. Most people looked pretty drained at that last stop. I was pretty sure one guy was gonna die on the way in (he actually stopped and took a ride a mile or two down the road, I'm glad he did -- I think he just didn't want a ride from us but wanted one from his wife).

And I don't think our century was as hard. It didn't have that much climbing.

Congrats, good job!

I'm 210-215 and I have to work pretty hard to burn 1000+ cals in an hour. So I'm guessing if you're heavier 7000+ could be realistic?

I just rode the metric. I couldn't imagine doing a full century on my Tarmac without some serious adjustments. Here is my Garmin data...

Ummm...why not? My Tarmac has been able to handle the longest rides I've thrown at it(given it was only a 45 miler since I only had 1 ride before I went back to school but I was still feeling good at the end). It can't be THAT bad...the pro's ride them for 3 weeks set up in a ridiculously aggressive position. You sure it isn't a fit issue?

I did my first (imperial) century in late September - It was pretty rough but I guess I did alright. #2 Will be in the spring!

Shoulders are my problem area and I'm still tweaking the stem angle and length. The last change helped, but I was still feeling it by the end. Big difference between the pros and me...

the pro's are pro's for a reason...100 miles may not seem like much, but its a big mountain to climb if your not used to doing that amount. Keep in mind also... the pro's ride in a peleton, on the hoods and are maybe exherting 30% of their max throughout the course of a 130 mile stage...they have structured nutrition/hydration times. If you watched Versus coverage of the tour you saw the workload that the lead riders were putting forth vs the rest of the pack.
My tour lasted one day... the TDF lasts almost three weeks (i think.......) so they train a bit longer...and dont sit behind a desk 8 hours a day like those of us in the Bike Forum world.

We arent pros...so we are probably running at 80% for a longer period...sometimes higher depending on the area of the ride and are not as properly educated on the finer aspects of what we need to intake to maintain a high performance level.

I think "Fit" both Bike Fit and Health Fit are big factors. I think also having a comfortable seat and properly cushioned shorts help. I loved my seat for 50 miles.. then the last 50 it felt like a rock!

Hey jasandalb,
Congrats on the century. The garmins are highly inaccurate on the calorie computation so don't rely on them too much. I'm not sure on the models but some have calorie computation with heart rate factored and some don't. For instance the Edge 500 does, when I wear my heart rate monitor the calorie numbers are close to half what they would be with out the heart rate monitor. I highly doubt you burned 7,058 my guess would be more like 3,500 - 4,500. Not to take anything away from what you did, on the bright side theres about 3500 calories in a pound of fat so you knocked at least that off.

I just looked at my last 100 mile ride and with the heart rate monitor It claims I burned 2800, total ellapsed time was 5 hours 30 minutes.

I have the edge 305. I guess your statement must be true.. I looked at the data from MPress and he rode the Metric and it says he burned 4710. All I know is I felt skinnier when I finished
