I wear short sleeve and long sleeve. What do you look for in a base layer, loose fit, tight fit, or mesh fabric?

I have a few to choose from. Short sleeve, long sleeve thin, long sleeve thick. The problem with sleeves though, my guns tend to rip out the seams. Or not.

Sleeveless. Less is more.

Fall protection. The over layer can slide against the under layer. Surprisingly effective.

The summer weight would still help in the winter, but I doubt the winter weight would help in the summer.

My winter one is from cabelas (polartec material) in their lightest weight (I think it was silk or 'technical')
My summer one is a DeFeet UnDShirt, super thin mesh.

Both.. If it's in the 40's I use a short sleeve with arm warmers. Much colder, I prefer my long sleeve UnderArmour Tee, because it's insulation value seem much greater than my Craft short sleeve Tee.

When Craft realized people would be willing to shell out $40 for a baselayer.
Not so much for an undershirt.

sleeveless. In the winter/early spring, I wear a long sleeve base layer over the sleeveless. Short sleeves on a base layer really don't do anything for you. They just get in the way of the jersey sleeves, especially if the jersey is race cut.

You have to try different things in cold. In New Jersey, in Nov-Feb, and it's 45 when you go out, it's probably not going to get to the 70's, so removable arm warmers are not what you need.

There is a value to carrying dry undergarments in a backpack or bike bag for longer cold weather rides. Changing out from sweat-wet to dry clothes is fantastic, even though you have to briefly expose your skin. Don't believe me, just try it and see if it works for you. If you are riding less than 90 minutes in 20-40 degree temps, not necessary.
