Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

long high angle stems

I'm looking for a long high angle stem.

The reason is that the front half of my S&S coupled road bike frame won't fit into the S&S hard suitcase without taking the fork out because the steerer tube is too long. The frame is 58 cm and the steerer tube uncut (400 mm length). I want to cut about 1.5 inches off the steerer tube and put a long high angle stem on it. Right now I've got an Easton EA70 80 mm 20 deg stem on the top of the steerer tube, and I'd actually like to get the handlebars about 1 inch higher and not change the reach much.

This is the best I've found so far: https://www.niagaracycle.com/product_...ucts_id=433735 It's a 120 mm 40 deg stem. Anybody know of a longer or higher angle stem than this?

Thanks.

stem chart: https://www.habcycles.com/fitting.html
20 deg 80mm stem is about the same as a 110mm 40deg stem.
as far as I know, there is no stem that has more than 40 degs.
origin 8 has a bunch of stems in 35 and 40d sizes, but the largest I've seen is 130mm, 40d.
comcycle usa has them.

have you considered a steerer extender?

you could try a threadless steer tube extender: https://www.amazon.com/Dimension-Stee.../dp/B000GASQ00

cut the steer tube 1.5 inches like you described, keep the same stem, and add the extender to bring the height back up to your current position. Then when you want to put it in the case, just take off the extender.

I highly doubt you're going to find a higher stem, so this seems like the easiest option

I have used the steerer extender from Dimension and it works very well. The bike is even less twitchy with it on.

Thanks, AEO.

Yes, I have considered a steerer extender. I don't prefer that method because it adds a part. Fewer parts is better. But I might have to go that route.

Take a look at the Octagon Steering System. Its basically a steerer tube extender that allows you to adjust its height. You could cut your steerer tube and install one of these. Raise the bars while riding and lower them while packing it away to make it fit.
