Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Where's the Di2 thread?

Noticed that PBK is currently offering it for a touch over $2k. I figured that folks here would be dancing in the streets. Di2 old news? Out of favor? Boring?

The total groupset will cost more like $2800-3000.

I tried out Di2 a while back and it did work very well.

However, aside from the price, which I feel is excessive compared to the alternatives, here are the 2 main reasons why I did not buy Di2:

1. Di2 doesn't add much more functionality than a properly adjusted standard groupset nor does it weight less (compared to SRAM Red, 7900, or 2011 Campagnolo Record11/SR11).

2. More points that can go wrong and hard to find parts; let's say you travel several times a year with your bike (for example, you just flew in to do RAGBRAI, Etape du Tour, or Maratona dles Dolomites) and your bike falls over whilst rested against the curb and the right shifter breaks. Where will you find a part? Or, you fly 3,000 miles for some 2 week trip and you forget the battery charger. etc.
2a. Let's say you are getting a bike frame with S&S couplers, do I really want to spend time making custom splitters for the electrical wiring? My answer was, "no".

Di2 works for some but I think the sales numbers or what you see in the street speak for themselves.

I've had Di2 for almost 2 years now, and love it.

While I don't care what you buy - and you should buy what you like - I just couldn't let the above misinformation go unanswered.

Paragraph 2 - You're assuming that a Campy Super Record 11 spare shifter would be 10 deep on the shelves in those places too. Also - what kind of a crappy part would break from just a "fall over?"

I charge my battery every 1,500 miles or so. I would be more upset about flying all that way and forgetting my cycling shoes.

2a. Now this is just silly. You don't remove all the standard cables when you fold your bike, do you? So why would the Di2 cables be any different?

I'll just say that when I was in Italy, it was pretty easy to get Campy (you don't NEED SR11 to make it work) and Shimano parts in any bike store I went to, even in the boonies--SRAM, not so much.

I was on the Gavia and saw an awesome shot so I rested my bike (with SRAM) against a wooden post while I took some photos; however, the wind just blew my bike right over. Thankfully, nothing happened but let's say my RD was busted, that would have been the end of my trip with SRAM (unless I was willing to overnight parts). Are you even going to attempt to argue that a Di2 RD is indestructible?

You can buy cycling shoes in any place you visit that has a bike store--Di2 battery or charger, doubtful?

TSA might confiscate the battery if it is packed inside an S&S case. One more thing that could go wrong.

Actually, apart from the front brake cable, yes, I plan on using cable splitters. Don't even pretend to tell me packing a bike with Di2 wires will be worth it into a standard 10" S&S case.

Again, Di2 works for some, or I should say, few--the numbers speak for themselves. It's a neat groupset, innovative, and all that jazz.

It just doesn't work for what I needed for my bike, as I clearly illustrated.

BTW, this is also a reason to get popular pedals (Campagnolo, Shimano SPD Mtn bike, Speedplay, Look KEO, etc.), in case you forget your shoes and also need cleats.

If one's not an idiot, this isn't much of a concern.

Search the threads. The praise from Di2 owners is about universal. I would have it on all my bikes but I'm too cheap ( if you get the humor in that). If you can afford Di2 get it. If you can't, don't worry about it. It won't be worth the cost.

A friend of mine just offered to sell me his old Di2 for a really good deal.
He said he'd sell it to me "cheap . . . real cheap".

Then when I asked him how much he wanted he said $2,000.00.
He said he was selling it cheap because he was missing the front derailleur and the charger.

wtf? I can get the whole groupset brand new for same price from PBK.

In my mind, I owned Di2 for about an hour.

Just to clarify, you can get the upgrade kit (derailers, shifters, battery, cables, charger) for around $2k, not the entire groupset.

$2k for the entire group would basically be about the same price as std. DA and I think they'd be selling a good number of units at that price.

Downing a shot (or two) of Martell XO Supreme usually had the desired effect of putting her right to sleep, but not this night. Visions of outfitting that 2008 or 2010 (depending on who you asked) Trek Madone Project 1 with a Di2 groupset had kept her up for hours. She had no inclination to tackle RAGBRAI or the Etape du Tour, although she wouldn’t mind another ski trip to the Dolomites (but we digress), so she had no worries about the Di2 serving her purposes.

The only thing for it was a windfall, and where oh where could she expect one of those? Just then the phone rang, rousing Cherchival from his coveted doggie catnap.

She could not believe her ears, former client Pepe La Naranjo was this very minute piloting his Beech Bonanza over her home and would like her to pick him up at DSI. He was actually going to BUY that $2.8m Gulf front albatross she had shown him during the Billy Bowlegs Festival last year!

Now I ain't one to typically throw around acronyms as if I worked for IBM or one of those new-fangled social media startups. But, the notion of throttling OCLV while revving up my SRM had me thinking smooth as silk Di2 -- sorry, not a big fan of the SRAM's cachunk. So, you'll have to excuse me.

That is a beauty. Although, I too know not about Di2 and aesthetics for that frame.

I would honestly make it internal routing or go with mechanical DA.

Thanks for that clarification. I currently run 7800 so I wouldn't need a whole new groupset. I wouldn't need a new crank. I wouldn't need a new cluster. I wouldn't need a new chain. But would I need new front brakes? Are the 7800 brakes compatible with Di2? I seem to recall that those Di2 paddle shifters are only compatible with 7900.

And I obviously I would need the front and rear derailleur, the battery and charging unit.
